Returning from Oulton Park yesterday afternoon with race car on trailer, the Transfer Box failed on my 09/1999 TD5 Discovery. This is the second time this has happened to me, the first just after I got the car at apprx 104k miles, now this time at 208k miles.... So I gues just over 100k miles from a Transfer Box is acceptable, but just bloody inconvenient.

Question....
I read about the Ashcroft conversion. Is it likely that the parts supplied in this kit will be enough to replace the failed parts in mine..? I know you are now saying... How do we know what has failed in yours... but from your vast collective knowledge, there must be a common failure, what is it....?

Your thoughts / advice would be appreciated.

Mark.

common fault on td5.my mates ones(he had 3)all did this and each time LR had to replace this.It was a known problem LR did not want to admit. The first one went at 2k miles!!!

With NO prior indication of failure (on both occasions) the car just felt that I had a trailer brake just snagging... like a little misfire but not from the engine (if that makes sense to you...). When I stopped and look around both trailer and Disco, i saw nothing obviously wrong, so set of again, this time it was plainly clear that the problem was transmission and on further examination the Transfer Box had developed an oil leak (a constant but slow drip). The noise (still driveable) was comparable to a washing machine full of spanners... :-(

...Yep.tell LR to fix it cos they fooked up.My mate went bananas at em.got an old tdi tradein in the end an a refund on the difference on 3 new wagons at the same time.the dealer was well ****ed but the fooked it up they fix em....

Come to think ofd it i think 4 lr went back in the end.He runs 3 lorrys and 5 landys 4 of which broke before 5k miles and so on....

If it had only done a small mileage, then I would have no hesitation on taking it back to Land Rover, BUT, I fear that after over 100,000 miles (most of those with a trailer), they would be very sympathetic to my cause.... So, what IS the 'common fault'? Is it what I have experienced? and What about the Ashcroft conversion?

Mark.

ashcroft make good money outta LR.Personally i would approach LR with my request first then look at a second hand trannybox off a tdi.Or even an 300tdi box+transfer....

The td5 ones are ****e.My bros 200tdi has covered 275 000 miles with no transmission issues and towed many a horse and log....

My 1999 TD5 defender had a new transfer box at about 120K. Sounds like 100k is a rough gauge to go by.

Im sure there are thousands out there that reached nothing like 100kmiles.
I know of 3 or 4 deffos for a start...
each time lr bowed down.100kmiles is ****e and ya know it.

I'll call Land Rover today, but just in case they don't fall over themselves to offer me a new free Transfer box, then has anyone else got any ideas....?

Mark.

Pulled the Transfer box today and stripped it. One bearing collapsed, NO gear damage BUT.... main casing cracked!

Does anyone have a spare casing? Is a Transfer Box from an Auto TD5 the same as the Manual?

Cheers,
Mark.
