Second post here so i hope its in the right section.

Having recently brought a 2002 Discovery TD5 ES Auto [Black with cream leather emm, lush!] Just wanted to share what mods I have done as I have been lurking here for a while getting ideas.

Driving home form Bristol where I brought it to Cardigan I knew it needed a bit of an arse kicking to make to drivable, but with no smoke knocks or rattles I was happy it would hopefully be a good one.

First chance I got out came the EGR. Next off was the down pipe and middle box, its bit noisy on a long run but sound pretty when it is pulling hard. Out with the old dirty paper filter {it was bad!} and replaced by a ITG filter.

Next on the hit list was handling it was all over the road above 40mph and bumpy back roads made it feel unsafe. Had it up on a friends lift to check out the bushes and wheel bearings but found the tyre pressures were ranging from 25 to 45psi was not helping, and some funny wear or on the limit tyres. Four new tyres later has made it a really secure nice drive. Road tyres not off roaders.

Full service using forte engine flush first. The engine oil was mank! and the fuel filter could have been the original it was choked full of silt. Coolant check at least it wasn't loosing any, so drained out flushed and replaced with OAT antifreeze florescent pink colour shame to hide it really!

Part 2

Although it was going vastly better than it was a few weeks ago, I wanted it to have a bit more grunt up the hill around here.

A call to Dynachip and a chat with Mike. As i live right out by the coast he promised to call when he was somewhere close[ish]. A week later and Mike suggested meeting in Cardiff as he was in Bristol so sort of half way each.
Great guy really knows his stuff, he got straight down to business and remapped her. Explaining and showing me the fuelling on the laptop all the time he was doing it.
He checked off some fault codes and had a look at hardware under the bonnet explaining the usual failures that could happen and checked mine out.
The MAF was reading zero and this explains why the car was so flat and responseless. Mike recommends not buying a cheapo one as they are crap but get a genuine one.
We went off for a drive to check it was all ok. Bloody hell! what a tool now! couldn't wait to chuck him out the car so I could drive home. He said she will be even better when you get the new MAF.

New LR MAF fitted a couple of days later and the car drives a treat am now getting about 30 mpg on a run and its bag of fun to drive not bad from an auto

Part 3

Having only one key was playing on my mind, also no EKA code was a concern and having seen Dynachip using his Nanocom I took the plunge and ordered one, handy piece of kit to take the guessing out of any repairs so I keep it in the disco.

With the Nanocom I was able to read the EKA code from the ecu, actually I have re-coded it so it is an easy number to remember (same as my pin for debit card!) and its easier to put in than the old code which had 12 and 16 in it. Was really tempted to just code it as 1 1 1 1 :)

Also have now brought a key blank and fob from ebay (the remote dr) he was very helpful too. I have reprogrammed the fob to work, just need the blank cut. So I took it to Timpsons in the high street. The very unhelpful git in there would not cut it unless i brought it from him. Ok can i order one from you then, replied NO we dont sell land rover keys. Cant I just pay you to copy my blank then. NO we dont cut blanks unless we sell them. Tosser, I farted on the way out the shop for good measure.
Little independent key cutter helped out no problem.

Also have changed to ecu setting from air sprung to coils as it has been modified before I got it but the pump could be heard cutting in occasionally. Rear seats removed so back to a five seater as I would rather the storage boxes.

I have cleared the adaptive settings in the autobox so it can re-learn my driving style with the remapped engine.

Next on the job list is to take off the inlet manifold as I didnt wash this out, but have done the intercooler. While its off I can change the glow plugs, change the seals in the fuel cooler, and the diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator as they are so much easier with the manifold off and cheap enough to do, but all common failure points.
