My Disco 2 auto from 04 with 85000 miles has a very irritating problem that no one to date can find or explain .Occasionally , well daily a strange thing will happen when driving at over 55mph the transmission will not shift into top gear, I have to pull over put the selector into Park , then back into drive and then it will shift into top . This happens daily and not when cold , there are no fault codes and the transmission oil has been changed twice and so has the filters . It can be driving perfectly and then all of a sudden when I have the ability to exceed more than 55mph I find I"m reving to 3000 rpm plus and no shift , so i would pull over and select park , drive and get on my way as if the was nothing wrong . Please please can someone give me some good advice , thank you

morning Adam, thanks for your reply. The dash and the stick are in D , there are no warning light and when I move the stick to third and then back to D there is no differance in engine speed ,I'm trying to find another transmission ECU to swap over to see if the problem is electrical , but this is driving me crazy .Could ther be a problem with the torque convertor ?

Have you reset the adaptive values on the auto ecu? When was the last time the gearbox oil was changed?

If the oil has been changed regularly - rather than twice in short order, then this would suggest you have a fault in the lockup clutch ( which is not another gear - but the TQ locking at 55MPH ).

No fault codes needs someone with more knowledge of the D2 'lectrics than me to comment on - @sierrafery being the man to ask IMHO ( hence me tagging him ;) ) - Which diagnostics were used ?

If the oil has been changed twice in short order, then this may have obstructed the governor - this would fit with your symptoms, BUT, some electrical weirdness could also cause it ..... BUT if it works occasionally then it is unlikely to be the LUC which has failed - more likely electrical or oil change related
