I have a 2001 Defender Extreme with about 200000 on the clock. This is a recent purchase and I am fairly new to the turbo diesel. While driving along towards Coober Pedy (Far North of South Australia) we heard a noise similar to an explosion of air. I thought we had blown a tire. In any case we pulled over to check and there appeared to be nothing amiss so we continued on. The defender seemed fine but I can no longer hear the turbo and we can't get over about 80 kilometres an hour in fifth gear.
Can anyone suggest what might have happened? I have had a look under the bonnet and I can't see too much amiss with any of the hoses. Having checked previous posts I am pretty certain that the turbo hasn't gone as there is no black smoke. There is no one in Coober who has the hardware to look at the ECU (we are talking outback Australia here) so any suggestions would be welcome. Also can anyone tell me if the Defender can be driven? I have to travel about 900 km to get to the nearest town that will have a Landrover mechanic.
