The defender just suddenly lost power yesterday and decided to cut out leaving me at the roadside.
After purging the fuel system I eventually got her going again but it took some cranking.

No warning lights etc, I'm assuming air maybe getting in somewhere but not 100 percent sure.

It has on occasion cut out just after a cold start too. Could this be linked?

I dont want to spend stupid money just yet so any indication on what I could target would be helpful .

Cheers

Check your air valve on the fuel filter housing, inside is a white little filter, clean this out very well and then replace it.
Looking at the housing it is the on on the rear, closest to the rear wheel.

otherwise it could be your injector seals or fuel pressure regulator. Would try the injectors seals first out of these 2

Fuel pressure regulator was changed a few months ago as it was leaking , I did forget to mention that. No issues with that particular item since.
The pump does whine alot and make some strange sounds when priming. This is normal??

Have you performed a air bleed cycle (ignition on —> press accelerator pedal 5 times or more until EMS light starts flashing and wait till done, then start)?

I have multiple Td5 and all pumps make a different sound so hard to tell. Most high pitch supersonic sounds are not good.
If you hear it ‘bubbling’ when priming it probably is sucking air, look at the air bleed valve on the fuel filter.

(I have a non starting Td5 myself right now with a different kind of problem, it drives my mad: https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/td5-does-not-crank-what-have-i-missed.359692/ )

That will be my next step then. The pumps always made a decent whine since I bought it but I havent had any bother with it.
Until yesterday when it just lost power and died on me.
I purged the system fully again last night and it's been fine since. But sods law is itll do it when I'm in the middle of nowhere. I was probably lucky to get it started yesterday.

I had this problem I took the pump out and cleaned it there was gunk round it and when the fuel was getting low it would struggle sucking it up the pump and mine cut out afew times worth a check.

I'll be cutting a hole in the floor to do that. Dont fancy dropping everything out from underneath lol.
This was with half a tank full, but I get what your saying. I was just surprised it happened. It wasnt so much a straight cut out. I was dropping gears and accelerating but there was just no response and it slowed to halt then cut out once I let my foot off.
And was a pig to restart. But it did after a purge and some serious cranking
