Yes, I think it can, by letting raw fuel drip into a cylinder, thus raising the compression lots, that makes the bad noise then the excess fuel burns off and makes a heap of smoke.
ok the indy garage have said 1 or 2 of the injectors has failed. they recommend taking them all out and sending them off for testing. I think though i may just replace 1 and see what happens(looks like inj3+4) than replace another if it needs it.

I've had this problem with starting the td5 over night, changed the MAF sensor £20 from scrap yard - starts first time after leaving over night now. Also increased the engine power as it was running in limp mode.
