So I have horrible horrible clunky noises from underneath! :(

When i lift and push down the accelerator. Also the clutch has been slipping intermittently for a while now. Im pretty sure its time for a new clutch plate and by the sounds of it a dual mass as well.

So my question to you lovely people who may have gone through this before is:

Do i get a new clutch kit inc release bearing, clutch plate, cover etc etc (the likes of the Valeo or the borg beck) and a new dual mass fly wheel?

Or shall i get rid of the dual mass and get a heavy duty clutch? (i think AP do one  )

I will be using OEM parts or reputable aftermarket parts which ever way i go. I have read that getting rid of the DM and getting a HD clutch will create a bit more road noise. not that fussed about that to be honest.

Anyway those with the experience, tell me about it :)

so, non of you gits have had to change a TD5 clutch?

i may have ,fit oe clutch kit and dual mass

been looking at the valeo clutch kit and the valeo DM flywheel kits.

Part of me thinks that LR fitted a DM for a reason but part of me thinks i can do with out the hassle so just get a heavy duty normal clutch.

You done any of these James?

there is a reason ,modern diesels have a good bit of harsh torque ,std clutch plate doesnt give enough damping so they put damping in the flywheel ,solid flywheel kit will give gear box chatter noticeable at idle ,id fit dual mass

thats all i need to hear. ;)

i have a friend who is very good with TD5's and he is always kind enough to offer his services, so not sure if i wil burden him with this or get a garage to do it.

Can it be done in a day James or more likely a weekend?

Just had the spigot bush replaced on my 2003 TD5 and changed clutch/dual mass flywheel while it was all apart.

Indie dealer Keith Gott in Hants said they had made and trialled a solid flywheel but it was so snatchy they binned it.

I did mine a few months back used valeo kit inc flywheel and took engine out as i think its quicker

Nice one Gents.

Ere Hamster, did you do it yourself? if so was it a pain in the arse?( i dont have a garage or air tools etc etc) Or did you get a garage to do it?

Expensive? i know clutch kit and flywheel are gonna be around the £400 mark and then labour.

i did mine myself, hired an engine crane and removed floor panels to allow crane to support gearbox and used a trolley jack underneath to turn the gearbox when needed,
I did mine on my own, it took 2 days, and the gearbox and transfer box is a big heavy lump, only changed the clutch, used a britpart replacement(I know, lol) but its been in there 3 years without a problem,
biggest job was pushing the gearbox back onto engine, would of been a lot easier with another pair of hands though

You're about right on the parts, my flywheel was £318.00 inc VAT, plus another £150 for the clutch kit. Do the spigot bush too - £1.87 if not included in the kit.

I was charged a day's labour but that included some other odds and sods which was £70 per hour inc tax.

I got a yard and engine hoist you can use if yer want mate,i can give you a hand

Ere ginge, i got exactly the same issue...my flywheel has been slowly dying for yonks. I'm frantically saving up some pennies before it finally goes :(

Nice one Si, ill bare that in mind. :)

your miles aint that far from mine are they reference a hazy conversation we had saturday night  DM they reckon lasts 70K isn. i have no evidence mine has been done. :( so ill do it with the clutch.

Does your clutch just slip sam? cos mines been doing that for a year or so with no issues, yours could just be the fuel pressure regulator leaking down your bell housing. if you catch that early enough you can save the clutch as it will burn the fuel off. Its when it soaks in and dissolves the clutch plate!

Did it myself all you need is and engine crain and some dry weather, i think its alot easier than seats and seat box out and trying to drag it out from under the motor
lift engine out change clutch while hanging there and drop back in ;)

I have fitted a few Single mass conversions and it is true they do give a little chatter at idle, and do seem to feel a little vibration when first pulling away.
Standard power TD5's with the single mass seem to need slightly more revs to pull off probably due to single mass being lighter.
However a few that have had big power mods feel much more responsive with the single mass.
I am not really a fan of dual mass either as they all seem to have excessive movement/play and can cause chatter.

I have heard other horror stories of people with snapped cranks due to fitting single mass as the shock load was not relieved by the dual mass.

However touch wood I have not seen this happen personally.

Tbh...i have no idea what a slipped clutch means or feels like

it makes a right racket on starting up and going into reverse and mechanic said flywheel on way out so......
