Help! My Disco2 TD5 (120,000 miles, 6 years old, owned from new) has developed a clutch judder over the last week. It's ok at "biting point" but as you start to release the clutch fully, there is a juddering and it's hard to get a smooth take-off. The problem is similar whether the engine's cold or warm. No problems once the car's rolling.
The clutch gets light use (I'm a handbrake user!), and the car does little driving around town anyway (mostly dual carriageway and trunk road journeys). As such I'm guessing that the clutch isn't actually worn out (and it's not slipping). Could it be contaminated? Anyone got any ideas/similar experience?
 
Mine does the same, but it gets better when the engine is at full temp, I'm told it's quite common, and prob a small amount of oil contamination, or a slight warp on the plates

It's on me list to do a new clutch, but that's a lot of work and a whole weekend under the motor, so it'll have to wait for a nice warm summer w.e. I expect.

Thing is it hasn't got any worse in the last 30k miles

p.s. mines clocked almost 98k and similar to you, mostly M way and I am also a light clutch user, never riding the pedal or using as a foot rest
 
Thanks Disco-Steve. I just did 300+ miles this weekend (mostly on A9, then some single-track road near Loch Ness). The problem seems to have improved slightly - it was really bad on Friday, but better today. Fingers crossed, as I would rather not spend the cash on a new clutch just now!
 
re your clutch i have just traded mine in with the same fault is your clutch pedal spongy or do you loose it on a long trip with out using the clutch? my fault was the usual the slave cylinder leaking contaminating the clutch easy diy job if you can use a spanner only thing to watch is the push rod, not letting it fall into the bell houseing that can be a pain or change the brake fluid as it could have lost its life with age.
 
Mine had the 'loss of pedal' problem when it was (luckily) still under warranty. The dealer changed the slave cylinder, didn't fix it, so they changed the master cylinder also . . that cured the problem.

It's clocked just over 98k now, and the clutch will judder when it's cold 1st thing . . but will be fine for rest of journey . . I will bite the bullet one day and change the clutch complete . . . but it's a lot of work and I have yet to psych myself up to it !!!
 
Hmm, bad news. The Disco spent the last 2 days in the garage, getting repaired by my local independant LR man. The problem was the flywheel. The mechanic actually showed me the problem flywheel, and it has lateral "play" in the mechanism - turns out this was causing the intermittant vibration. The flywheel, clutch (50% worn, but replaced while we were there), a few other related bits, and an ACE pressure sensor (the ACE light was sticking on), and a replaced rear diff oil seal... £780 incl labour. I've checked the invoice against prices on the web, and it looks like I got a reasonable deal all in all.

Beware of juddering clutches...may be an expensive flywheel!
 
hijacking an old thread, have exactly same prob as you describe, judders in 1st and reverse but perfect in other gears! only does it sometime, not all the time and if i rev hard it doesnt happen.
I brought car (manual TD5 disco) a few weeks ago, the previous owner had stealership change clutch and DMF after which he noted a significant improvement in judder but not totally cured...

any advice chaps?
 
new dmf by the sounds of it ,dealers dont allways use genuine parts and genuine parts can fail

I think the chap supplied the stealership with the DMF to fit, i'll check my paperwork..if it has gone then they obviously wont warrant any of the work!? doh!
