I've had my Discovery (2000) for about 3 months now and am getting round to sorting all the (minor) oil / fuel leaks. The last one I could see appeared to be a constant drip from the Automatic Transmission oil filler/level plug. I removed the plug to check for seals etc. I have read the excellent guide to changing the oil and filter on Discovery2.

I raised the front wheels a couple of inches to assist with getting underneath. When I removed the plug a lot of oil came out that I wasn't expecting. It would appear to me to have been overfilled, but I have no idea how you could overfill it. When the oil began to stop flowing, I replaced the plug.

Should the oil level have been this high, as my understanding it that it should just run out the bottom of the filer hole when the vehicle is level. The main reason I'm asking is I don't want to knacker my gear box. Also, there is no rubber washed on the bolt, just a metal seal that appears to be part on the sump housing. Is it OK?

you need to have engine running and gear box in neutral after first selecting all gears to check correct level which is important as you say when vehicle is level

Engine running :doh: thats where I went worng. Thanks for your help. I've found the fault. The garage who carried out the last service did not replace the washer on the filler bolt That's why there is a constant drip.

Got the parts and put everything back together today, and put in the new oil. No leaks and the gear changes are nice and smooth
