And today's question
I have noticed when I select drive I get a clonking sound, it tends to be on start up and doesn't happen going from drive to neutral or reverse, only from park into drive, sometimes it's louder than others.
Could this be due to low atf?
I don't know if this is related but I am also getting a whining noise in low revs on pull away, as soon as I get to 3rd gear it stops, again not always as loud as others, I thought it was the drivers hub at first but not so sure now.

Oh I am on the case with the watts linkage but if I am taking it off the road for a couple of days I should try to look into this too, only happens in drive, jostling on start up but I noticed just now in town when I let foot of the throttle and then push down again sometimes I het a smaller clonk, sometimes when i start up and pull away it's hardly noticeable and sometimes it loud, can lack of atf cause this ?

Yep, it can, but if it is that low, I'd be getting on the case yesterday else your gearbox might need a bit more than some oil in

Could also be that the ATF is kaput - when was it last changed ? any more than 25K ago, and I'd change it .... :)

I had an intercooler pipe blow a couple of months back and lost all drive, I got recovered, replaced the hose and filled gearbox, it had probably done 10k maximum on the atf and filter change before that, I did check the level after running the engine / driving a bit but wondered if it was a bit low if this could happen, I will check the level tomorrow and top up of needed.
Am going to put the landy on 4 big chocks of wood on a level surface and give it a good look over, see if anything is loose / got movement that shouldn't be there, I have to take off road to sort the watts linkage anyway so as the weather is good now is the time to do it, also before it goes totally kaput.

Put the transfer box in neutral and see if you hear the clonk then...if not the problem is in the transfer box and needs a rebuild with the ashcroft kit

strangely this gearbox also gets clunky when its slightly overfilled so i would be making sure it was glass pond level and then checking that

Well it took about a litre which was more than I expected and the chunking seems to have stopped. Phew! That's one thing off the list.

An update on the clunking sound, if I go from drive to neutral and then back to drive there is no clunk, only when I go from either reverse or park, I am sure I noticed a clunk now and then when pulling away in town earlier.

ok so I start up as usual, put transfer into neutral, then select drive, no clunk mean transfer box rebuild .... bugger. Is that a massive job? I have tools and good mechanical experiance but not done a transfer box before.

Just a side thought, could the hand brake maybe be catching? I know it's a drum brake system, I think I am clutching at straws though......

Unfortunately i can't help with that, all i know is that i bought the master rebuild kit and a HD cross pin from Ashcroft's and the rest was done by my mechanic in one day
