Our TD5 auto keeps illuminating the tranmission fluid temperature warning light.
It has alway done this ocassionally when towing on hot days but recently it does it whatever the weather when towing up gradients and sometimes even when not towing.
I did a fluid change a few years ago. I also did another one in June this year (along with a filter change) and I need to follow it up with a second one to help change most of the fluid in the 'box.
The old fluid does not look black or smell at all.
Is there anything else that could be causing the light to come on?
Would it be worth trying one of the fully synthetic heavy duty ATFs?

yearly is enough for oil change ie 4-5 litres that drains out ,if oil has no sign of burnt clutch ,swap switch
 
Crawl under and follow the wires back from the xyz switch on the side of gearbox. You'll find 2 black female spade connectors. These are meant for a temp sensor on the transfer box, but on the auto the sensor is on the cooler under intercooler, so they are just left hanging. Check these spade connectors are not shorting together, as this will put your transmission temp light on.

Whilst your there also check the gearbox harness isn't chaffing on top of transfer case. This is another fault.

You can get at the sensor on the end of the oil cooler from the drivers side (RHS) wheelarch.
 
Excuse me if I'm being a bit thick here (but I frequently am when it comes to mechanics!) but if the fault is as described, does that mean it is safe to ignore? My warning light comes on intermittently too. Generally it is when going up hill but not necessarily under hard work. The Disco frequently goes off road. Fluids were last changed in January. From the advice in this thread it appears to suggest a faulty switch or wire. I'm wondering if this is vulnerable when used off road?

If I were you I would change the autobox fluid temp sensor. They are cheap to buy and it's an easy job via the front RHS wheelarch access hatch.

Re the off-road comment, not sure what you mean? Auto box cars not good for offroad? That's certainly not the case, they are excellent.

I chain the autobox fluid once a year, don't allow it to drift out further than that or you'll be asking for trouble.


The problem is that these temp sensors are known to be a pain, so do you just completely ignore them, or replace? Only you can decide that I'm afraid.
