Good evening.
I have a 1999 auto disco 2 with a rather strange issue and looking for advise before I start removing plastic to look at wiring.
A few weeks back it started to show the M&S warning lights when selecting reverse. I quickly removed the XYZ switch and overhauled it thinking that would solve the issue.
After reinstalling the same issue was still there. However…..
I found that if the brake pedal is not depressed when going from any gear (including park) the problem doesn’t arise. Go from park to reverse with the handbrake on, no issue. Go from park to reverse with the brake depressed and the warning lights and limp home is activated. Any ideas?

Have you had any of the fault codes read ?

You could try....

a please or a thank you.

Are the gear indications normal on cluster and gear selector?

It could be a wiring issue, battery issue, not enough voltage to the EATS ecu..

Look around the brake pedal for contact with a loom, also check the P clip on top of the transmission. Commonly it wears the insulation in a non obvious way that can lead to exactly this sort of stupid seeming behaviour.

We like to hear solutions, how was the problem sorted?

It’s not currently. It’s actually got worse and now decides to create the problem brake depressed or no brake depressed. I’ve read somewhere that the ECU needs or ‘re-learn’ the switch after overhaul which I’m having trouble believing.

Another potential cause is that I’ve not set the adjustment right when I put the gear linkage back on.

Fault reader just says ‘gear selection switch fault’. I can’t remember the code.

I’ll have another look over the weekend. It’s been on the back burner as I was stupid enough to buy a 2004 L322 4.4 so have been slowly going through the issues with that. Nearly all sorted now though so focus back on the disco.

I’ll keep you posted.
