When warm, the box whines (in time to engine rev's). Box was serviced last year and changes are smooth. Is this a sign the box is on the way out?

Did originally wonder that but it changes with engine speed rather than road speed. Noise is similar to when radios in old cars got interference from the engine put through the speakers (if you get what I mean!)

Try rev-ing in neutral as this will still spin the TC and the ATF pump.

What did the box service entail?

Will try that. The box had the full works (oil, filters, full system flush and cooler cleaned) due to the temp warning light coming on most days. Old oil was completly stuffed

Well that is what I would call 'the business'. A heck of a lot more than most places would do as part of an auto box 'service' :)

Tried reving in neutral, still whines, and today temp warning light came on and box is holding on to revs slot more before changing. Looks like it needs a closer look

These boxes are normally bullet proof so I am surprised you are having problems. My local garage who is a Land Rover specialist told me the biggest problem with these boxes is getting the correct oil level as it does not have a dipstick filling arrangement as with the 300 tdi.The fact that the temp warning light is also coming on may be an indication that the oil level is low, or might even be a non compatible oil.

Auto box oil change/top up is well documented on the old faithful site, link below.

This site is great for quick questions /chat/ banter you name it, its just excellent.

But Discovery 2 site (for those that have one that is) answers most problems with the aid of pictures.A great reference point.

Good luck

Had it looked at this morning. Looks like it's the TC on the way out as they said gear changes are a bit slow and could be causing the horrible vibration at 2200rpm. Been quoted £600 for TC replacement or £1350 all in for complete new box. They think the temp warning could be down to a dodgy sensor
