Hi
Can anyone pinpoint the issue with my TD5 auto.
When pulling gently to build up speed, in some gears, on some occasions, the car doesn't change up as though it normally would progressively. Instead, it holds the gear as if you have used kickdown. Instead of changing at very roughly 2500rpm, it wants to get to 3200 of 4000 ish before changing up.
Has anyone had this happen. I'm thinking it may be the gear selector switch, or the gearbox ecu. Any experience would be appreciated.
Thanks
Marc

Hi Marc, here's a couple of thoughts:

1. During the engine warm-up cycle the engine ECU talks to the transmission ECU and tells it to hold onto the gears for longer, to help warming the engine;

2. Gearbox change points are dependant on the amount of throttle you give it;

3. Torque converter lock-up can sometimes feel like the gearbox is doing strange things, you need to be sure you can tell the difference between normal gear changes and TC lock-up.

To be sure where the problem is you need to run some comparative tests.

Hi Dave
Cheers, but I don't think it's any of those.
What it's doing is not changing up as it normally would. Instead it's holding the gear until the point at which it would change up if I had used kick down - or kickdown in sport mode, even when not in sport mode, and with me giving it the lightest possible throttle.
It's all the time including when it's warm.
Because it's variable as to which gear it does it in and when, i'm in two minds as to whether the selector module switch or the ecu is likely to be the issue.
I may just have to fork out and get it on the diagnostic computer at the local LR garage I guess.
