Hi there

I have a 99 Disco II TD5 Auto and the temperature warning light for the auto box used to come on now and again - had the auto box checked and serviced with new oil and filters and told that all is well. only problem now is that warning light is on all time from start even if vehicle has been sitting there for days, so must be faulty sensor according to garage.

Just wondering if it's easy to disconnect sensor or even to replace it? Anyone else ever seen this? As I say box has been checked and serviced and appears to be working fine over all length journeys so is there anything else could be causing light to stay on?

Would it be a bad idea to disconnect sensor and how would I?? Just catches my eye all time I am driving.

Had the same issue on mine and it was the temp' sender. It isn't too bad to replace and is located at the bottom right of the gearbox oil cooler (off side). This is below the intercooler, which is bolted to the radiator.
The book says remove the intercooler first and unbolt everything, but I did mine by removing the front offside wheel and removing an access panel. If you release the bolts that hold the rads together, you can just get to it through the wheel arch. Have the new sensor ready and be quick, as you will loose gearbox oil the second you remove the old one.

Not sure if I would go the disconnect route, as it there for a reason and for the sake of a few quid it's better to know if the gearbox is really overheating.

Seems to be quite straightforward to do. Just gets on my nerves being on the whole time especially when i know that box is fine.

Does the sensor have to be got from Land Rover Dealer or can it be got from any independants?? Are they expensive??

I got mine from a dealer, but it was a couple of years ago so can't remember the exact cost, but I'm sure it was only around £10-£20.
Just remember to be quick when you take the old one out - which sounds easy, but the sapce is very limited (which always seems to be the case when working on these).
