Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a little advice, recently I parked my car up after running perfectly, I popped back to it after 25 mins and it wouldn't start at all. RAC visit and some Ez start got it running again until home.

Now the engine starts after letting the fuel pump run its cycle and idles perfectly.

When I rev the engine to 2700 the engine cuts out, to get it going again I have to let the fuel pump run a full cycle before it'll start. Anything up to there is fine, it just that wall.

My Hawkeye gives the following code: 3197 Top switch Logged as Failed.

Most people say the ECU needs repair, (there was oil in red plug). Is there anything else I could try before shelling out for a new one?

It's a NNN ECU

Replace injector harness with genuine LR and clean red plug on ECU out with electrical contact cleaner. Keep checking it can take a few weeks for all the residual oil to clear.

@sierrafery will be able to help with fault code

I suspect your injector seals may need replacing as well. Would benefit investigating fuel system

Thanks for the advice, I will get them replaced today to see if it will resolve my issues, fingers crossed.

I had the top side switching fault, I sent the ECU away to be checked and they said it's ok, but they wanted to repair it anyway.
I bought a second hand one on e bay and 're programmed it and it seems to be ok now.
As Smithy says may be a good idea to change the lead under the rocker cover and clean out the red plug every few days for a couple of weeks, it's a very common problem on the TD5

Thanks, I got the lead changed over, im going to change over the injector rings tonight hopefully. If not I guess it will be the ECU and i will send it off for a test.

Leave the ECU propped up overnight on some kitchen roll with the plugs downward to drain as much oil as you can

Just an updated, after changing the seals & fuel pump I decided to get my ECU tested... It was the ECU, as everyone says 99% of the time its an ECU fault!

Cheers everyone

Did you change the injector lead? Best to be on the safe side now you are running again, the oil problem is a pain in the arse and it takes quite a while to get it all out, I used to squirt my red plug and wipe it out every few days until it stopped oiling up.
Don't know why someone hasent made a short lead with sealed cable to fit inbetween the injector lead and the plug on the front of the engine to act as an oil dam and block the oil from entering the main harness.

Hey, yeah I replaced the injector harness as my second step and have been cleaning the red plug every few days, just waiting for my ECU to arrive back from repair now. I wish they would make one of those too haha, would be alot cheaper than this

Hope this will sort it out for you, would be interested to hear your opinion on the ECU repair people, I still have my original and I wouldn't mind getting it fixed as a spare, these things will soon become very hard to find, the company who looked at mine offered to "fix" it even though they said it was ok but the fix comes with a lifetime guarantee,
and a £300+ bill.

I was actually uncertain about sending it off so I drove to the ECU Testing guys in Derbyshire, I was really impressed by their work space and professionalism, I dropped it off (they also do a postal service) for testing Wednesday and on Thursday morning they gave me a call to give me the results, it showed up as faulty (If no fault is found there is a £50ish fee). I paid £308 for my NNN ECU repair, This morning I picked the ECU up.

I put it back in my car this evening, and no more Top Switch fault and no more cut-out at 2700 RPM, really impressed by them. They said it comes with a Life Time Warranty on the whole unit not just the repaired parts, i'm just happy to no longer have cutouts.

If i come across a faulty ECU I may well get another done in the future as a backup too.
