hi all, turned ignition key on td4 and nothing, the battery is fine and all the other lectrics still work.

have tried the usual stuff, theres no noise from the starter.

if it was some engine sensor i guess it would still turn over.
would it turn over if the imobilser was on.

i have noticed that the engine management light is on,does this only go out whe the engine is running.

how can i check if its the starter, or the solenoid.

car was running perfectly on tuesday night,

cheers all

Check the starter motor low tension lead, as they can come off ( normally a small lead with spade type fitting on or near top of starter).
Or maybe it is the imobiliser , you could also try arming and rearming the alarm a few times that sometimes works if it is imobiliser related.
Cant think what else it could be ....especially if it was ok before.
Hope this helps

Exactly the same problem has happened to me! My normally very reliable Td4, just doesn't want to know. Turn key and it is dead! All other electrics look good!
Recovery man suggested disconnecting the battery for half an hour or so - is this worth a try?
Any pointers would be very gratefully received!
Thanks.

reet td4 only . . . .check fuse 1 = 150amps [big bastid] and fuse 7 = 40amps . . .if these are ok then check ,[starter relay] by turning on off key and feeling if it clicks ,if not swap wiff a like fer like one, if that is ok ,wiff a volt meter measure the brown and red cable that go's to the starter [solenoid] now if you get bout 12volt signal on that , yer solenoid is fooked , if yer don't get a signal check yer ignition switch, oh un the solenoid and starter are all in one , meaning that you have to take the whole starter out to fix the other bit. . . .best oh luck earthling. . . .:)

Well thanks for your advice gentlemen. Read up as much as I could about the start and immobilization system off the RAVE cd last night, armed with this knowledge, your advice, a multimeter and a big stick hidden behind my back just in case - I gentle turned the key listening for starter relays etc. - and the bloody thing started straight away!!!!!!!!!!
So whilst it is now working - how long before the problem perhaps returns. How I hate intermittent snags!!!!!

Chris.

TITTER . . .well its sods law , but the solenoid and the said relay can kick up intermittent faults, and though i jested bout the battery ,at the cold times it has to be tip top on a diesel ,will pull well over 200 amps on a cold day .glow plugs +solenoid +starter . . . .so at least you've got the jist of it ,just keep a eye onnit . . .oh un best oh luck earthling:) :) :)

... the battery is fine...

But have you actually tested the battery? The dash lights, central locking, etc, etc use bugger all power compared to starting the engine. Get the battery checked or replaced and try again.

Cheers
