Hello itthink it's one at back of wheel arch. It ddidn'twwant to start today because the pump was sticking so aa said . And also advisedto have adr lead checked because Iit splutters when you start her up when she is cold.

Mine does exactly the same, has done it for 2 1/2 years never got any worse thankfully if it was turbo seals i would expect blue smoke rather than white ,and the intercooler hoses to have a lot of oil in them , i was told that it was injector overfueling , but it goes like a train and pulls 1500kg with no probs ,so i;ll leave it a loan for now .

I can't believe nobody has sorted this fault yet or have they ? I was talking to a guy who has a FL the same year as mine and he has spent a fortune trying to sort it.

Just came across this thread. White, acrid smoke is un-burnt fuel, its caused by leaking injectors or incorrect timing and its usually worse at higher revs, sometimes gets even worse when the engine is warm, thats when the un-burnt fuel gets to burn off inside the exhaust manifold.
My TD5 did it, have you had your injectors properly tested?
I sent my injectors for testing, its not expensive, around £30 each at a proper diesel place, like Merlin Diesels.
I did the unplug thing as well, it didnt help with tracing the fault.
One of my injectors was leaking badly, the others were fine.
Have you had any fault codes read?
Diesels have been around for long enough that this sort of issue should not be a long/expensive "treasure hunt"!
Mark

It seems a lot have had their injectors tested and replaced and still getting the same problem, my guess in the turbo boost control solenoid.

I have only just stumbled on this thread, as I am getting the same thing, as some of you may have seen in my thread that's been active the last week or so:

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/2003-td4-coolant-going-down-oil-going-up.295478/page-2

Havent sent my injectors off yet, but in terms of symptoms getting the exact same thing. Starts fine, coughs a bit for 10 seconds with a bit of a plume if smoke (worse the colder it is outside) but once it has cleared its throat, runs absolutely fine. My slight misfire is at 2,000 rpm + as well, and is only really noticeable when stationary, not whilst moving.

Bit confused where to go from here, I have thought my MAF is on the way out but not sure this would display this as a symptom?

+1 Redwood - can't believe this was flagged in 2011 and no-one has managed to resolve this? It's not stopping me using the car, but I just can't keep driving round knowing something is up...

Hi I'm having similar problems, when first started it's starts fine and runs fine,as soon as I swittch it off and restart when it's warm it misses and runs lumpy,so far I've cleaned the maf but have a new one on its way as that didn't help, changed the fuel filter (like some one said previously what a bitch of a job) , I took it to my mechanic who put it on a snap on diagnostic and it came up with 3 faults one was the maf sensor ,the other was the delivery fuel pressure sensor, and the 3rd is the boost control valve , so I'm doing one at a time and see what happens .

You are probably looking at the fuel pressure regulator repair loom YMQ503320. Its a known fault on TD4, the sensors are usually OK - its corrosion in the loom's connector.

the other was the delivery fuel pressure sensor, and

given all the recent rain ..
try some contact-cleaner water-dispersant in the fuel rail pressure sensor plug / socket

Mine does this misfire with smoke at 2k Rpm. However it only does it when the engine is unloaded. Any load on the engine and it runs smoothly without smoke or misfire. I would describe my smoke as more blue than white however. It doesn't smoke at any other time except when the engine is held at 2K Rpm. The longer it's held at 2K, the more it smokes. However it only smokes when it's misfiring.

Mine seems to misfire once its warm and then yes it does smoke too but more of a whiter smoke and it misfires through all the revs, hopefully changing these bits may cure the problem fingers crossed ,thanks for your reply

I have this exact problem too. Garage owning old friend of mine thinks that the fuel filter had not not been changed for too long putting strain on the low pressure pump which then starts to fail. The smoke, he thinks, is due to the pump not supplying fuel at the correct pressure at idling to match the injector timing hence the unburnt diesel and the smoke. I have a replacement pump on order and will have it fitted by the end of the week. I'll let you know how it goes...

Fingers crossed it works , I have put on the new maf and it did make a difference but it's still not right still missing a bit but power has seemed to increased will be good to hear your results .

Here's mine held at 2K Rpm. The smoke looks blue-ish when viewed in the shade. However it's white when sun light is illuminating it.

The fuel pump has been done and now when I rev to 2000rpm no stuttering and no smoke. Only had a quick run so far but is certainly driving smoother. I'll take her for a run over the weekend and report back, but it's looking good at the moment. Given these symptoms, the fuel pump & filter could well be the culprits...

Blanking the EGR helped stop some of the smoke coming out of mine when I did it - as did the BMW vortex mod. Sounds to me like fuel filter/pump as I had. Either that or injectors..?

Sound good I've just put on a egr bypass and it seems to have made worse even less power and smokes like hell
Sometimes a bad batch of fuel can cause this kind of issue.
Try putting a good fuel system cleaner through it and use Shell V Power.
