hello all
coming home from hols today, i noticed black smoke coming from the exhaust of my td4 freelander -
if i backed off the accelerator this stopped
it lost all power going up hills - unless i put my foot down then i get black smoke from exhaust.

on tickover the engine sounds a1
i cant hear the normal turbo whistle
its now got hardly any acceleration.
if it tke the oil filler cap off there is no smoke - emissions
it starts perectly

when driving it feels like the turbo want to kick in as if something is hiolding it back

any ideas
 
Hi matey don't panic just yet. theres a rubber hose on the top of the engine under the plastic cover, its the hose that comes from the intercooler to the inlet airbox feed box thingy mine burst / cut through where it rubbed on the edge of the rocker box cover, had all the black smoke and severe lose of power. mines auto so didn't want to change gear of anything. nightmare... £20 quid ish from main dealer or get a silicon one if you can, if its not that check the hose clips and unions on all the turbo hoses they've been known to pop off hope this helps...cartman690...let us know how it goes..:)

this sounds an intresting one, Only from the smoky bit cos i have a similar problem,ie smoking when accellerating (hard)
Presumably no mil light has come up on the instrument display?
so 1st thing have a look at the intercooler hoses to see if ones split,sound like a probable cause or yer poor acceleration
Let us know what yer find

will check on monday - have also been told that ht eoil return pipe from turbo to engine can become blocked then oil is passed through seals causing black smoke and loss of power.

There are a few common things which cause loss of power and/or smoking on td4's

1. air flow meter is reading too low.
2. split turbo/intercooler hoses.
3. the breather in the rocker cover is blocked (very common on vehicles with 30,000+ miles). easy check- warm the engine, pull out the dipstick and rev it, if oil comes out, its blocked, if left it will kill the turbo.
4. vacuum hoses for the turbo modulator split or the modulator has failed.
5. blocked air filter (will also give low air flow readings)

you say if you remove the oil filler the smoking stops, i'd check item #3 first!

thanks for the advice / help

checked the hose as you suggested and yes there is a hole in the pipe.
its not where its been rubbed, its on a bend, looks like someone has put a stanley knife through it, any way, i put tape ove the split then went on a 20 mile run - perfect. i will get a new pipe on monday.

have been thinkingf of selling the td4, have done less than 4000 since dec 05 as now have a rover 75 turbo diesel for my job.

bit ****ed about the pipe, the car had a 12000 service in december 05 and a new mot.
shouldnt the servie have noticed some thing.

could this have caused any damage to the turbo?

Didn't hurt mine the tape will hold for a while but the pipe gets abit oily and it will pop again, think its to do with emissions recyling or somthing puts oil vapour in there and the pipes rot or perrish id go for silicon if you can get it. and p.s. keep the car they're great fun, don't tell anyone but I went off roading in mine to a meeting as my other car was ill. and it did very well all me mates in their serios kit took the p*ss outta us but while they were slippin spinin and gettin stuck my hairdressers car as they called it just drove past em all traction contoling abs ing and hill decent controling great fun even if ill never live it down at bristol off road club...:D
 
can any one help i have black smoke on tickover but clears at about 1500 rpm it won't pass mot like this any ideas please
 
Black smoke on a diesel is usually down to over fueling caused by injectors not atomizing (piddling) especially on tickover. Might be an idea to do a search on this forum for TD4 injector faults as there is plenty of info that has previously been posted. Split intercooler hoses and blocked crankcase breathers should not be a problem on tickover so I would rule these out. Injection pumps can cause over fueling but not on your type of injection system.

I recently bought a td4 and the black smoke was noticed by my other half following me after collection. After reading elsewhere about all of the above I decided to buy a full service kit (all filters + the breather valve assy) and set about the service.
I had/have the MIL flashing on briefly each time I hit 70mph but no noticeable power loss. The initial pick up is a big sluggish and diagnostics have pointed at the turbo being knackered.

The breather valve (Item 3 above) looked like it had never been changed in its life and internet info would suggest that this has taken the turbo out! It was the most disgusting filthy black slop I have ever seen on a motor part (incl EGR contamination) and its replacement instantly stopped the black smoke.

Whilst I can live with the turbo being in its current state it is innevitable that when funds allow I will have to dig deep.

Tbh I am surprised at how well the motor performs with a supposed knackered turbo, and as said, no severe power loss, no limp mode etc and will easily hold 85mph with more to go should I choose to.

Knowing what I know now about the breather valve assy I would seriously encourage anyone to inspect/replace this item as a matter of priority.

It's approx a £35.00 item which could easily turn into a £500.00 plus mistake if not seen to. With what is involved in changing the turbo I feel a used item is out of the question, even with a warranty.
