I only get to drive my freelander at the weekends and first trip out the car is always very sluggish. If I drive it the next day it is fine, does it have some sort of learning ECU ?

is it kept in a garage ..if outside may be damp..wd 40 it ...it need a motorway blast for def..blow crap out,,have you cleaned egr...pcv ..crank case filter
 
Do you start and go or allow the engine to warm up. Sometimes it better to allow the lubes to warm up and let the turbo also oil before going. Also do a weekly vehicle check P.E.T.R.O.L. or D.I.E.S.E.L. so you can monitor any future snags

What is it with everybody and weekly checks of their cars - think I'd rather get a bike! Thought that sort of stuff went out in the 40's. I just keep tabs on my drive to make sure it not accumulating oil at an increased rate and actually check the cars every now and then plus before/after a long trip.

Interestingly, our drive has always had 1 Land Rover and 1 Toyota on it since we've lived here plus "another" - maybe Mazda, Rover. The drive under the Landie always accumulates oil at a slower rate than the others - and they always have oil in them! The Toyota's a 1.3 '92, done a couple of hundred 1,000Ks - and when it sounds like a bag of spanners on start up - I know it needs an oil top up. Been doing that for 12 years and its been fine :)

I'm not sure how WD40 will help a sluggish diesel engine? :/
My guess would be look at the lift pump. It could well be on its way out. Does the car climb hills sluggishly too?
 
quite simple...if its being left standing...damp is a worse enemy...i can remember many times a blast of wd40 as worked wonders...poss a bit of damp may be shorting power to a cylinder ..then when its hots up...damp goes..its sitting all week
 
maybe the air filter gets damp from standing for days in this weather ..
potentially inhibiting air flow over the maf sensor ..
then as it dries out with engine running .. flow returns to 'normal'

just a theory :)
 
Cheers for the replies. if I go to it on say Saturday its sluggish at first, it turns over fine but can be a little spluttery/lumpy at first and does not like rev's, if I leave it for a minute or so this then clears and is just sluggish after I drive off. Come back to the car the next day and its perfectly fine from cold ???
