Hi all

I have a freebie registered on 11/10/2000, but the Vin number says its a 2001 model (11). how can this be?

Has my freebie been pre registered? its on an X by the way.

Model year isn't the same as calendar year. Its like magazines - you can go into a shop and buy a May 2010 edition of a mag, but they're printed and for sale in April.....

The reason why? Marketing!

If you were choosing between 2 manufacturers, one was a 2001 model and one was a 2000 model, you might think that the 2001 model was more modern or better. Except its not, because all manufacturers do it.

Traditionally the production lines are changed to build the next years models during the summer shut down, so they will start making them about September, ready to show at the British Motorshow, traditionally held in October/November, and going on sale about the same time. The dates of the Motorshow have changed, but the rest stays, the 2010 Range Rovers and Discovery 4 were being delivered during the autumn.

Out of interest; does it have the light coloured dash with green vents/dials etc. The reason I ask this is that my ES is a 2001 and has the light grey and black dash and I suspect that the interior was changed at the beginning of 2001.

...I do realise that this doesn't actually answer your question directly; but hope it may shed a slither of peripheral light on the matter

My ES X TD4 has the former and was built in October 2001. (51 plate) Not sure if that puts your theory out the window.

No it has the light coloured dash with the green vents, the old style interior as I call it. I`ve up to now only seen the black interior, on 02 and upwards registered vehicles? Maybe its the transision period.

My freebie is definatly legit.

I also have a vw registered in sept 00 and its on a x, but the vin says its a 2001 model. They must all be made pre the year to be sold, as mentioned by others on previous posts.

Doe`s this mean my freebie has the crap IRD and rear diff?

Did you know this before your original post?

In a way?? When using ELSAWIN for VW`s when I input the vin says its a 2001, but why its on a X (00) I can only asume its been pre registered? is this the right explanation?

I`ve never really thought about it untill I bought this freebie and its seems the same?

I get a newer car I presume, and pay less road tax, as I`m pre march 2001 which is always cheaper then post March 2001

also have a nov 2000 x reg, its a 2001 model, and you need to quote this when buying spares as a lot of part nos. change

I know what you mean, Insurance ( it cant be a TD4 as its registered in 00)/ Parts (getting parts for an L series etc. The 2001 had a total revamp, new nearly every thing.

..Far be it from me to make any suggestion of any foul play - merely a theory from a non-expert.

As to the IRD/Rear Differential - I am very much the wrong person to ask as my 51 ES Td4 has had BOTH replaced.
