Good Day all i was doing a oil change for myself and noticed something that does not look right on the cap there is supposed to be a rod from the center of the cap passing throgh the oil filter and seated in the oil filter assembly,On mine its missing now with this missing on my cap it does not fit snug,And at the top of the filter there will be a space by the cap so i believe some oil will not be filtered Question: What is the purpose of the rod on the cap.Because i was thinking of modifying the the cap to seal off the the top of the oil filter.

OK i uploaded two attachments the one with the spanner is the one i have the other is the one i believe should be in hope this helps thanks.

OK - I see what you mean - yours has the centre gubbins missing.

I reckon that the oil will be by-passing the filter.

If it were mine I'd be off to a scrap-yard and check for a replacement.

The M47 is one of the most popular engines BMW made so shouldn't be a problem finding one.

As well as Freelanders check BMW E46 320Ds and the 520Ds too. Rover 75s and MG Zts.

I wouldn't attempt any DIY fixes. :(

Singvogel.

OK thanks I live in the Caribbean Trinidad very hard to get used parts scrap-yard carry mostly Asian model vehicles, So i have to by new and they charge a arm and two legs  for Land-rover parts here what i was going to do was make a adapter to block the top of the filter so the oil can pass through it an not over it, by the way do you think as the oil is passing a bit more freely will this affect my oil pressure ?

Hi , you need to get the correct replacement part , or the oil filter wont be doing any filtering !

Thanks all for the advice given i replaced the Cap i forgot to mention before my oil light was staying on while idling and when i rev up to 2000 rpm's it would go out Mechanics said it was the oil switch so i changed it was not the problem so they said it was the oil pump so i bought one when i ordered the cap turns out the cap was the problem  so now i have a spare oil pump ,But anyway thanks again for your advice on the cap.
