How annoying was it!!?!. What a pain in the bottom, take off underbelly cover(seized rear bolts), then socket wouldnt quite fit filter cap(filed a tiny bit off now), then could hardly get filter out as the freebie is auto box and aircon so it was all a bit bloomin tight, refitting sump plug and washer from the dealers seemed a tad smaller than the one i took off which has made me paranoid now so i have left the underbelly cover off for now to see if it leaks?. I swear to god i normally quite enjoy basic maintenance but this......grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!. I am retiring to the garden now with a cold beer.:mad:
 
Just done same

Wait till you do the air filter & fuel filter

Air filter - Diff locating top of cover back on

Fuel Filter - Find the screw, unscrewed from housing get bracket back on, I was sat in engine putting old one back as i couldn't unscrew old canister from housing

Autobox oil is easy once you know which are filler and level screws

IRD - Check level, Now have cut wrist after 16" breaker bar required to undo 19mm bolt and then you find the drain bolt is 21mm and i only have 20 & 22mm
 
If its the bolts Im thinking of, then they are 17mm M10

Rachet spanner is the tool of choice for sump guard removal.

Do what alot of us do . Drill a 4" hole under the oil filter for quick access

Not under the oil filter but underneath the bolt of the oilpan it is

Funny you say that, i have already done a momentus battle with the fuel filter when i replaced the inline fuel pump (both inside rear passenger wheel arch linings), the filter was absolutely seized in its plastic mounting i used WD40 etc in the end i took the whole lot off and mounted it in a vice :mad: . As for the air filter well that is yet to arrive in the post and how i am so looking forward to fitting that :eek: . Its putting me off doing my own maintenance everything is so bloomin awkward to replace and access.

think of it as an experience and the next time you need to do it it will become easy. just be patient#

If you still feel down, walk into your Landrover dealer tomorrow and have a look at their service price board, That will make you smile
 
Your right Shutty, i asked my trusty independent landy garage how much for an oil/filter change on the TD4 and he calmly says around £80 or so +vat. Apparently its the oil cost as it is fully synth..:eek: .

Thats why i did it for the total of £5 for filter, 40p for sump washer and £31.99 for oil all in £37.40!!. As it happens though Halfords were doing BOGOF on their fully synth oil so i did save there.

The cheapest service on the freelander at their place is £220+vat.

As Hippoos are such good, well designed motors, why couldnt Landrover put a hole in the undertray from new?
 
Apparently when the gaylander was designed they wanted to install a death ray in the engine bay to prevent owner maintenance. But the legal bods said no so they came up with the present configuration instead.
 
Thanks all , feel really good about just buying an '03 TD4 Kalahari for the missus .

She's good with bolts ................ it's the nuts she has problems with !

Why use that outrageously expensive synthetic oil?

What is wrong with Tractor Universal at 80 pence a litre?

I use it in all our cars and Landies and dumpers and tractors and generators and lawnmowers.

We change the stuff when we feel inclined.

It's a great oil is that - it has to be when you realise what farmers do to it!
