Had been running fine although the starter had seemed weak, went to start a week or so ago and got "tick tick tick" from the starter, but engine didn't turn over.
Battery was low after not running for some months, so tried first with a jump pack and then with a jump from another car, same result.
I thought, most likely, solenoid needs sorting or the starter is knackered. Just over 100k miles so could be either.
Found a starter, replaced it, identical problem.
I think it unlikely the engine has suddently seized without me knowing, but I guess it could be that.
Bit stuck now. Any suggestions?
Thanks

If the starter was engaging on a siezed engine, I presume you'd just hear a 'thump'.

Maybe the 'big wire' going to the starter has corroded.

Maybe the starter relay is dodgy, clicking in and out - easy to check by swapping it with another.

Yep have swapped with another. Completely new (OEM*) unit but has an identical fault.
May be the high current feed, as you said. Would make sense.
Thanks I'll investigate that.

* - not actually OEM - that's an overused term, but you know what I mean

You say you've replaced the starter/solenoid, but have you replaced the relay?

Is there an easy way to test the relay? I guess put a voltage across it and see if the circuit stays closed...

Check your earths as well, the wife's car did this, had new battery and starter it was the bloody earth strap

A click from the relay and solenoid and not turning over is often a flat battery. Even a jump won't solve it due to the voltage drop. Check battery voltage when cranking and maybe charge it.

You could flash 12v to the lucas connector in the starter with the control lead disconnected. This would test the starter. Relay and immob module and ignition switch are other test points.
