hi, i hope there is someone out there who can help to point me in the right direction.
i have a 2001 td4 auto. it is usualy well loaded up and returns 30-32 mpg and when empty on a run returned 38mpg which i thought was about right. under light throttle and normal driving no smoke at all . when i put my foot down there is a cloud of grey smoke and then it is all ok again.
i have checked the intercooler hoses(all ok) replaced the engine breather filter and fitted an egr bypass.
the only other fault apart from the smoke is, after driving gently for a while if i come to a hill and ease my foot down it feels like it missfires almost as if the choke has been pulled on ! (i know it hasn`t got one but that is how it feels ) then a puff of smoke and it`s back to normal again.
sorry for long msg and look forward to any suggestions
thanks in advance

As the crankcase breather has be done (it would have ben my initial thought) then my money is on turbo overboosting.

is there an easy way to prove this ? i did wonder about the maf ?

Yep. A quick check on a diagnostic computer will show if there is/has been overboost. If it was the maf it would show loss of power in general. Try unplugging yer MAF and going for a drive in general.

ok, thanks. i`ve been trawling through the old threads and now have a head full of stuff to check! with regards to the maf , if i dissconnect and i get no change that means its ok? and if it improves then the maf is faulty is that right?
can the boost solenoid be checked ?
thanks again.

can the boost solenoid be checked ? to be 100% honest I'm not sure as I've never tried to check one.
thanks again.

My TD4 was 'misfiring' and the fault was a knackered injector. Do check my other post regarding a great repair centre for injectors.

hi. i`ve tried disconnecting the maf , didint seem to make much difference apart from it would cut out when driven hard. i`ve checked all the vacuum pipes that i could find ( all ok ). i removed and cleaned the sensor in the inlet manifold. still no change !
smoking when i put my foot down and missfiring at low revs ( not all the time ) i think the miss is at about 1800 revs.
any ideas ?

ok thanks. i`m going to do a few checks this weekend . i`m hoping it`s not injector problems!

You could try doing a leak test on the injectors to confirm this.

I would be finding someone with a diagnostic computer though to try and eliminate the guesswork. The more plugs/connections you mess about with now the harder it'll be to find the fault as you'll be chucking up other faults too.

the missfire is still with me ! its an auto and when hitting a hill and just ease the accelerator down it missfires and i believe woulld continue to do so if i left it on light throttle but i dont like it doing it so i back off and then put my foot down and it clears.
the smoking problem is getting embarassing now, no smoke at all under general driving but when i floor it there is a slight delay then a BIG cloud of dirty smoke and off i go , if i keep my foot down there is no more smoke even when it changes to the next gear ?
help ?

hi ratty . sorry i hadn`t seen your reply . do you think that a diagnostic computer would pick it up ? i haven`t had any lights come on .

Yes it will show up if there are issues with the injectors or other components, find a good independent LR garage and ask them to check.
