My 2005 TD4 had the engine management light coming on intermittently on the freeway, shortly after the fuel filter was changed at 100000kms/62000miles. (Prematurely according to the maintenance schedule). Code showed low fuel pressure requiring a new diesel pump. I suggest you have your car linked up to Land Rover Diagnostics ASAP.

My TD4 is also doing that - exact symptoms as above. It does it from about 5 miles into the journey, lasts for about 3, then it clears. It will do the very same thing the next day, at same point in the journey.

I also have a diesel leak (wet underguard under engine - not the leak off pipes as far as I can see). I'm hoping it is not the diesel pump, I believe these are expensive?

Suppose I will have to poke around underneath and source the leak, and get a diagnostic done.

This car has been nothing but bother since I bought it in Jan 09 - a real money pit....

Mine went to 2 garages! Main dealer and a specialist and both found nothing. I have now changed EGR, maf, intercoller hose.

Hi

Very similar symptons to my Td4.

I was towing my caravan along the M6, and sudenly, lack of power, struggled to keep it over 50, Black smoke, a whistling noise but, when I took the van off, the car seems to be ok. to be honest a thought the lack of power before was normal for these cars but now I'm not so sure.

could this be the same thing, When it happened I stopped and checked the water and the Oil and they were fine.

Will a garage know straight away, or will they need to investigate, going to take it in tomorrow to a garage in Epping Forest and worried coz so far from home and don't wanna spend arm and leg, otherwise may have to sell the wife, then who will cook the burgers.

:cool::croc::eek:

sounds like a leaking intercooler hose..........

just got to say many thanks for this thread. i developed the exact symptoms stated and after a visit to the local dealer (Guy Salmon) everything has now been resolved.
again many thanks.:)

Excuse me my saying but as I'm probably not the only forummember who doesn't know Guy Salmon, I guess people could be more interested in knowing what he did to solve your problem ??;):D:D:D (This for future use to others .....)

Sorry, new to posting items. I bought a new solenoid from the local dealer (Guy Salmon), located as photo and fitted in 15 - 20 minutes and the problem was solved. Well done in giving details.

Hi guys, I'm new to this site and a recent owner of a landrover freelander TD4 Sport. I am posting a question on this thread because it is related.

I too am loosing power at around 3000revs. It started on saturday but no warning lights. Now the engine management malfuntion lwaring light comes on whenever I lose the power. I have booked the car in to be looked at but in the meantime need to use it.

I have to do a round trip of about 250 miles tomorrow on motorways. Will I be ok if I remain below the 3000rec threshold, or will that threshold get lower and lower and therefore have to crawl along at 20mph on the motorway?

I would be most grateful of one of you kind knowledgable chaps could help.

Cheers
N

Could it be the fuel filter needs to be changed ? Might be that at high revs not enough fuel delivered ?? (Or the fuel pump missing some breath ??) Mine's an automatic and I can't recall it ever has been doing 3000 revs when driving normally ?? Only when driving to pass the yearly MOT I keep it in manual and push the different speeds to the maximum revs, once at the motorway I select a gear lower to make sure the revs stay high, that way the exhaust is more or less cleaned, it's going to have it's 10th anniversary now and up till now, and knock on wood, not have had any problems. Good luck.

I'm having the same problem. Lack of power at 3k rpm, or approx 70 mph. The problem occurs intermittently and is more likely to occur when climbing hills while on a motorway or dual carriageway. The car will come back to life again after about 30 seconds, until the cycle starts again. Below 3k rpm, the car handles and performs fine, you wouldn't know there's a problem.

A few weeks ago I did put 6 litres of SVO in the fuel tank, not sure if it could be related but the car has probably had over 60 litres worth of normal diesel in it since them. (and yes, I know it's not considered to be a great idea in the TD4!)

I noticed many different possible causes in this thread. Which should I look into first?

Cheers

Did you check your MAF already ? If not, just pull the plug and try to drive without it for a couple of days to see if any difference ?

Ive just joined landyzone to solve any issues I may have with my 2001 freelander TD4 and judging by what Ive read so far on the forum I feel I must say that the information and fixes is brilliantly helpful. I agree with you dann, it would be great to have a spot on the site purely for "fixes to our landy problems" mate. Great stuff Kungfu.

Hi everyone, I had same issue and found a long split in top intercooler so pipe replaced today the pipe, my TD4 started all ok.
BUT!
A few minutes later wont start at all, clicking noise but oil light remains on. Any ideas?? Ive checked dipstick and seems there is some oil still.
Im stumped :/ help would be gratefully recieved :) im worried!

Hi not sure.

I changed the top intercooler hose and did not make any difference to mine. Is the connector plugged into the little electrical plug in the middle of the hose?

I changed the fuel filter a few days ago but I'm still having this problem.

- Intermittent power loss at approx 3k rpm / 70 mph
- More likely to occur while driving up an incline / hill
- More likely to occur with extra load (passengers / trailer etc)

I have put some Wynn's fuel injector cleaner into the car to see if that helps. If no luck, I guess I should look at the MAF sensor?

I have exactly the same problem as Kungfu and RichM.
I changed the long top intercooler pipe(it had a little hole), I've changed the turbo boost solenoid, I replaced the air vacuum filter, its had a service so all other filters are done and still no good.
I put it in another garage and they stuck it on a diagnostics and that said that it was the maf sensor. So thats been changed, along with all the little pipes that go to the boost solenoid and £230 later and its still no bloody good.
What else is there to look at? Could it be my engine management gizmo is knackered.
Any help would be appreciated as I really like my Landy but if it stays like this I'll have to flog it and that wont sit easy on my conscience because I know it's a pup.

Perhaps the injectors.
