Hi, we have a little problem with our 2004 td4.

A few weeks we pulled up after a 50 mile trip up the road and the car iddled very irratic, almost like it was going to stall and then recovers it self and back to nearly stalling/recovering etc etc.

we let it cool down cause it was a hot day and tried starting her but she started then stalled. we tried this a few times and she just stalls until we started her a revved her hard in which black smoke came out and then she was fine.

i thought it may be a fuel issue so iv changed the fuel filter and gave it a complete service including (air filter/oil filter/new oil/crankcase breather/turbo breather)

it seems to have been fine up until yesterday when it did the same thing. My partner who drives the car says it seems to be holding back every so often lately too. its done 150k miles if that helps.

another thing i should point i should mention is the blanking plate that i used to block the EGR had deteriated so iv taken it out (would that make a difference?)

possible causes - faulty MAP/MAF sensor? ----fuel issue? --- diesel in injector(s)?

thanks

just had a call from the other half saying it wouldnt start :-/

she has got it going after revving it hard

any ideas?

Hi
If you've taken the EGR plate out, what did you replace it with? I would suggest starting there first. If you read the EGR thread, and follow the fitting instructions, this may cure your issue ;)

@crockett007 - Iv not replaced the EGR blanking plate that has perished with anything. as it stands its unblocked again. Im going to purchase one of those proper blanking units off ebay today i think.

@mjrimmer - raspy? uumm it defo sounds like its hunting really bad. Its very inconsistent though, maybe once every 2 weeks or so. My partner says its started to feel like its holding back a little at certain points.

I drove it last night and kept it in second at about 15mph and it was fine for about 15 secs then a little pull back as if id taken my foot of the throttle and then it picked straight back up again.

Its got the power when you put your foot down, even at low revs

do they just start doing that or do they just stop working altogether?

is there a way i can be certain thats the fault?

Check the Injectors for leaks,do a leakback test,if it's not them or a blocked fuel filter, then it must be a fuel pump!!;)

going to do a leakback test once iv figured out exactly how to do it ha ha

i drove the car yesterday 50 miles up the road and on 3 occasions at traffic lights when stationary it just started to randomly wobble, almost like it was going to stall.

i revved it hard and it was fine, on the second time black smoke came out

does that still point more towards a fule pump issue rather than injectors?

Personally I think do the leak back test first then pump and filter also check the plug and contacts are clean on the fuel rail pressure sensor.........if you have a synergy tuning box turn it off to see if this makes a difference.
