Hello, yesterday we went out and bought a 51 plate Freelander TD4 GS drove it 40 miles back home, and does drive very well, this is my first landy, although we have found a few small problems, the first one being that the interier lights at the front, don't work at all, the light over the back seats works when i open the door and turn it on, but nothing happens with the front, also the glove box light is out, we have checked the fuses all ok and had alook on the board where the lights are, someone mentioned that it could be earthing problems, obviously it being such a small problem we dont really want to spend huge amount of money but is frustration when on the motorway and need a light!

also really stupid question, bottom rear brake light is out, i can see the light is screwed in with star screws, do i have to remove the plastic to change bulb, sorry :p

The interior lights suffer from corrosion. Remove the plastic housing and first check the bulbs. You should be able to see if a bulb has blown by the broken filament. If the bulbs are ok there can be problems with the pcb that operate the lights and the wiring loom connector. Remove the wiring connector and give the connectors a little scrape with a flat screwdriver. Next clean up the copper track of the pcb with some wire wool and apply some wd40 to stop it corroding up as quickly again. Apparently some moisture gets in from outside via the roof mounted aerial seal. This worked for me after an intermittent fault.

With regards the brake bulbs in the bumper, they always tend to blow in winter. Remove the 2 star screws and withdraw the housing from the bumper. Unlock the bulb holders and slide them out of the casing to change the bulbs. Easy 2 minute job. I carry spare bulbs with me as they tend to go all the time in the cold weather.
 
The star head screws holding the breake light glass in place are called Torx and you can get bits from most places if you don't already have them.
 
Would like to thank you for your responces, turns out the wiring going into the brake light wasn't connected properly bought some new crimps today to sort it out, the issue with the interier light hasn't changed, we have taken the light out, changed the bulbs around and they haven't blown, we removed the wiring connector which was extremely dirty, all looks good but still no lights, i don't think its a major problem as the light over the back seats works when doors are open and switch!
As i dont know my way around a landy i don't know what else i can try, would it be worth buying a second hand light unit to pop in and try!?
 
You need a new light unit, had the same prob turned out i had a keak coming through where the aerial is fitted and destroyed to circuit board, could probly fid one on ebay around 20 pound I expect.
