My Freelander has developed a growling noise around the front passenger side wheel area ?
Have read already about a guy with a similar problem who replaced a front wheell bearing which did not cure the problem, Another guy suggested it was more likely to be the front VCU bearing.
Or could it be the VCU its self ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Jack the front wheel up and waggle it about, if it moves a fair bit its more likely the bearing had gone.
Vcu bearings tend to make a whum whum noise as you decelerate, not always, but usually.

Spin the suspect wheel while holding the spring. You should feel the bearing's vibrations through it. Worn bearings usually go noisy without play first, then quieter with play.

Get underneath the car and thump the front prop as it joins the bearing. If this is worn, it usually knocks slightly. Also, you can run the car in gear with all four wheel off the ground, using a large screwdriver as a stethoscope. Be careful.
