Hi i own a 2002 td4 softback and have been having problems with the fuel system and wondered if anyone else has or may be able to help the problem is as follows.

the first leak i had was where the rubber fuel pipe from filter to engine starting spraying diesel out where it goes onto the metal pipe on the engine, it was as if the metal clip holding the pipe on wasnt able to hold in place so i replaced it with a jubilee clip and end of problem.

a few weeks later whilst driving along i had a sudden loss of power and could smell diesel when i had a look the small pipe that goes from the top of the fuel pump to the filter had split i had also noticed prior to this the pipe was rising up on the pump as if the clip could barely hold it because of the amount of pressure, after fitting a new pipe at a cost of £58 just for a 7" long pipe all was good again.

a few days later the pipe split engine end again where i had replaced jubilee clip now after fixing that it has started dripping from a pipe behind pump and filter area this cant be a coincidence i am sure it must be getting to much pressure somehow has anybody else experienced this, also the top fuel pump used to play up sometimes so i replaced this when i replaced the pipe so the problem has happened with 2 different pumps so i dont think theres any probs there.

any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Hi. Looks like the fuel pressure is too high on the low pressure side of the system. It should be 29 to 35 psi and is controlled by a pressure relief valve located in the pipework which branches off from the fuel filter output line. Beyond this valve the pipework returns to the fuel tank eventually. Another possibility is that the return pipe to the tank is either crushed or kinked. Good luck.
