Evening All,

Got a call from my Mrs late afternoon, engine making a noise, what type of noise, like a building site was the answer. Pulleys not turning was another description, upshot is car is in garage.

I haven't seen car as garage shut by the time I got home.

Garage changed turbo just before Christmas as turbo was leaking oil on their advice, turbo sent without gaskets, so had to wait another two days as the company sent them by post.

We have driven to London and back since turbo fitted 540 mile round trip, no issues, did about 100 miles there and probably another 30 since. happened all of a sudden, sound goes off completely when heating turned off FL1 has a fuel burning heater (FBH, a surprise to me, found out from this site, interested in ).

Any ideas ?

Mrs will be using mine, and I am committed to train :( and boat :) however not paying to have my car in a carpark :), so thats all good.

have a look down the pulley side of your engine can you see any metal swarf or fairy dust as I call it get a torch and look down if so you will see it shining back, and if this is the case it is your bottom pulley gone they are made in two pieces and that's a sign of them coming apart .the engine will sound like it is a lawn mower. sorry I can not listen to it as my speakers on my computer have gone
 
yes defo the bottom pulley I got my speakers working .the torque setting are a must first tighten it up to 100NM or 74Lbs then angle tighten a further 60 degrees then a further 60 degrees again and finally 30 degrees , to get it off you either need to lock the engine up this is the best way or use a air wrench. hope this helps
 
Many thanks for your replies, she is there picking it up now, I work away during the week. only went back last night so she had transport. I will let her explain what the problem is, I think she will be joining the LZ community this evening.
 
Hi All, Mrs Pompey here - just to say thanks to you all for your advice, it was indeed the crankshaft pulley and am pleased to report the offender has now been replaced and my landy is back home The mechanic had quite a battle to remove, rang me a few times throughout the day to let me know he couldn't get it off and apparently broke quite a few tools in the process! Anyway, best go and introduce myself officially now I'm on 'ere

Glad the pulley is sorted.
They can be buggers to get off. I recently battled for over an hour with the pulley on a friends BMW X3. It took a lot more effort to remove, than it should.
At least your pulley is done for the next 70K miles.
 
Thanks for the welcome Nodge68 and that's good to know it'll do the next 70k, one less thing to replace
 
Thanks Arctic2, saw your post but as LZ was down for most of yesterday, not until after garage had rung to say it was ready. I've no idea which he's actually fitted and whether its as you recommended but quoted me £115 for the part if that's any indication?
 
its seems by the price they have fitted the better one I made a tool to keep the pulley in place while the bolt was removed I am now going to approach one of the big tool makers to see if they can make it , it saves locking up the engine and you can get the socket through it .

Thanks anyway all, I trust the mechanic we use, had a chat with him on the phone today. Pointed him in this direction. he found a track rod end gone, so that's being replaced, MOT in March, we spoke about the clutch and possible DMF failure ( jerky very occasionally 0-10, normally after motorway, then traffic jam ), I still thnk the VCU/Bearings are responsible, to me when driving it is coming from directly beneath me, which is where the VCU is.

Will get him to do the OWUT, should have asked him to do it at the time but was busy at the time, either send me the results or talk to bell directly.

The absence of LZ on that day just goes to show how wonderful this website is, thanks to the owners, and its members.
 
Thanks Nodge I did not realise that one was out there if I had known that some years ago I would have brought one and not bothered making one
