can I run something past u to see what u think

one of my neighbours a few doors down buys cars at auction and sells them

he advised me that he recentely bought a 5 door freelander and came with a lot of parts that he will sell

however there is a td4 engine and asked if I wanted it for 100 quid

he's never heard it run so is an unknown factor of its condition , as I've not seen it

well I was thinking about it could be a nice little project for me, mines on 180,000 miles and touch wood is running nicely

but I know it won't last forever and wish to keep the car as all the brakes , suspension have been down and runs really well

I've got a nice brick shed that's only about 8 foot sq but enough room to do an engine rebuild
there's a strong bench in there and can easily get a engine support crane so I can turn the engine 360 degree

am toying with the idea as it will give me something to do and doesn't matter if it takes 6 x months or so to rebuild it

would take the head off, check the bores and get the block rebore, new Pistons , and crankshaft bearings done, then would only be a case of getting the head done, new timing chain, belts etc

but suppose it will depend in what i will find when I take the head off, don't want to take the risk of just dropping it in without being tested

do u think 500 quid would cover parts or do u think it would be a lot more than that

plus I know it came out of a manual and mines an auto, is it just a question of putting my flywheel etc onto the other engine

can do little bits each and every month and as I've got not hobbies what so ever and maybe help me along the way with my depression in giving me something constructive to do

thks as always guys

Sounds like a great opportunity, wish I had the spanner skills to do something like this.
Good luck mate! 😃

for £100 I'd be inclined to have a punt, can always sell it back on (possibly at a profit).

plus the dismantling and reassembly will give you a whole wealth of knowledge about the engine currently fitted, and help to understand that one a lot better.
