Could do with some advice on an issue that has cropped up with my 2001 Freelander Td4 Auto in the last couple of weeks.
I am getting three syptoms:

1. Engine turns over for 8-10 seconds before it fires up (with or without pre-heat). Hot or cold.

2. When idling with the autobox in 'N', the engine revs fluctuate (not wildly). Very often it stalls.

3. When engine is running and ignition is switched off it usually continues to run for 3-4 seconds before cutting out.

Non of these symptoms are permanent though they do seem to becoming more often the rule rather than the exception.

The car has been regularly dealer serviced from new (now 101,000 miles) and the last service was 2500 miles ago.
Fuel pump, solenoid, any ideas?
Grateful for any suggestions.

there have been a few posts on cam sensor issues but think they were about cranking when warm.

one issue that could be worth looking into for the prolonged cranking is your injectors,
if one or more of your injectors leak back fuel during cranking it take a few seconds more to start,
this can be tested as follows,
remove engine cover to gain access to injectors,
remove fuel pipe from top of injectors and clamp that pipe off,
dry out top of injectors,
turn ignition onto position 2 and if fuel leaks back out the top of injector then that injector is faulty, the fuel leaking back makes injector lose pressure,
also you can test for leakage while cranking but disconnect the cam sensor 1st,

hope this helps

Would this cause the engine run-on when switching off the ignition?

no but one of the relays in the engine fuse box may be sticking (main relay), not something i've heard of though

other stuff with bad starting are low pressure fuel pump (and high pressure) packing up, seen this a few times, it will need to go on T4 to check the pressures

off the top of my head i think its 350kpa for low side and 28,000kpa for high side, any lower and you'll have bad starting, if they're low then the injector leak off will need to be checked first, if thats ok then i'd say it'll be one of the pumps
