so do the bmw filter need looking after or is it fit and foget it many thanks dawn

No, of course you can't forget it - the BMW cyclone-vortex gizmo and the springy part in the cover-plate need regular washing out in petrol or some such cleaner every 100,000 miles.

I've already got it pencilled-in in my Filofax for 1st April 2020.

Until then I'm forgetting about it though. :D

Caio, Singvogel.

Hi, I read somewhere that BMW states it is due every 80.000km to get cleaned. But can't find anymore where I read it.

The BMW mechanic pal I have said 100K, but maybe he was exaggerating a bit just to emphasise how it was almost fit and forget.

It's telephone numbers of miles (or kilometres) anyway compared to the mini toilet-roll job that was originally fitted.

This seems like an old thread but someone may read it. Can you guess what this is?

It is the filter that came out of the crankshaft breather following a full service and filter change, in Greece. As you can see they have chucked away the outside of the filter, kept the interior cage and wrapped a bit of J cloth around it all held in place with some chicken wire. I discovered this whilst doing the BMW filter upgrade on my newly gifted Freelander TD4. You have to admire their creativity.
warm regards from France
Paul
BTW they also chucked away the plastic centering clip, I am glad I don't need it.

Hello, I just had the same surprise on TD4 - I removed the breather casing and it was empty - no filter inside. It was also relatively clean - just a little oily. I started the engine with the breather removed just to see if there is any spillage but there was none. Is it possible that the vents are blocked somewhere also?

If the breather is blocked, oil will be ejected out the dipstick tube, so it would be obvious.
If there's no filter in the PCV housing, then flow rate is high, so few deposits build up.
Just fitting a new filter is all that's needed.
