Hello ,I bought a td4 2002 just recently and it started making an horrendous noise coming from the engine bay which sounded like grinding gears when reversing and also accelerating through 1st,2nd and 3rd gears. I booked it into a local approved garage through the warranty and they said it was the transfer box, is this the same as the IRD ? Also they've sent away the gearbox for full investigation to see if that's okay and have suggested changing the clutch whilst the box is out. Sounds reasonable to me but they've quoted me £450 for parts alone saying that its a dual clutch or something. I'm not really "mechanically car minded" as you can tell but does this sound right to you ie the price and reason for the high cost ?

Any feedback GREATLY ACCEPTED. :)

A new clutch (complete) wont cos a quarter o that. and seein how its in bit anyway there takin the ****!

I suggested just replacing the clutch plate as i know it and the housing (as most pictures of clutch's are shown) and they said doing this would just cause clutch judder ? He said it's a different clutch to most cars and started going on about the flywheel and other things so I switched off. Can anyone point me in the direction of an exploded view/picture of the clutch set up for a freelander so at least I then know what he's on about. Would just replacing the plate cause a juddder in the long run ?

Thankx

As in the previous post is the transfer drive the same as a the "ird" and would £900 sound right to replace it.

As I am aware the transfer box is the IRD as for the clutch I had mine done 3mths ago but didn't have the flywheel changed and it cost £428 parts and labour, had it needed the flywheel too this would have pushed the cost upto around £750-£800. Apparently the flywheel has an integral rubber damper (similar to the main pulley the one wot drives all yer add ons alternator, air con etc) any pappyness in the rubber can cause clutch judder and clutch to wear out reet quick if theres no play in the rubber I'd risk it but ya never know, maybe I was lucky

So your gearbox is already out for warranty work and he wants £400+ for the clutch, yes if he had to remove the clutch as a one part job but not at that price as the gearbox is already out.

Clutch is about £150 they should charge no more than £50 to fit it whilst they are doing the other work.
