Hi ,hope you can help. My Freelander td4 has developed a clutch problem ,there is no sign of slip but sometimes when I depress the clutch it seems to stay down but still does not slip but it then is hard to get into gear until a little foot play gets the peddle back up then the couch works again although it does seem a bot stiff, can you please help, Kieron

Check the simple things first:
1. Check fluid level in master cylinder.
2. Check for leaks around the master cylinder rod where it joins the pedal, then under the bonnet check for leaks along the entire line till it disappears into the bellhousing, especially the quick-release junction.
3. Check for leaks under the bellhousing.

Hopefully you only need a new master - if the slave or clutch it's gearbox out time.

Hi guiniafowl ,thanks for that I will check them tomorrow ,don't know wether you can help with something that may or may not be linked to this, some time ago I got a shaking, wobbling ,that seemed to be the drive shaft so that was duly renewed Ann it still carried on so I had new drive shafts fitted and it carried on the same .i then tried running without the drive shaft(viscose joint one)and it sook even more. Now I have read a little about the clutch and I find it has a dual mass flywheel I am now wondering if that could be the cause of the wobble in wich .case a complete new clutch and flywheel woul fix all. Thanks. Kieron

Hi, bleed the clutch system, I had exactly the same issue, researched and every one says its sealed for life and you will you need new master cylinder, that's a load of rubish. You will need fluid, a syringe to get he fluid into the master cylinder as its right under the bulkhead, a 13mm and 8mm spanners. bleed is nipple just above the gearbox have someone in the car to pump the pedal, then flush out the old fluid and any air then you should be ok.

Hi,

I doubt the DMF would cause a 'wobble'. It normally makes noise when the engine is idling and perhaps a clunk when taking up drive.

Coasting the car in neutral, then just parking it and revving the engine will differentiate a drivetrain wobble from an engine one. You'll have to be more specific - when does it occur, what speed, what wobbles (steering wheel?). If it's around 50 mph, + or - steering wheel then it could just be an unbalanced tyre, for example.

As for the master cyl - a bleed might help, but as I say check the simple things first. I doubt air in the system would cause your pedal to jam down, but it's worth eliminating before you go spending.

Hi thanks again for advice.it wobbles almost from starting till about 65mph .you feel it through the gearstick the floor the steering wheel and the seat it is very much like wheel wobble but I had new tyres fitted ,four wheel tracking and ballence and all was still the same.it lasts longer if it's towing or if it's carrying a full load. Thanks .Kieron

Hmmm, odd one. The FL has six driveshafts - two at the front and back, and two in the middle. We can hopefully eliminate the middle ones as you say the problem persists with these removed. We can also eliminate the wheels and tyres.

If loaded, the tyres are compressed, and the suspension as well. This would alter the angle of the other four driveshafts. My guess therefore is that you may have a faulty/bent driveshaft. My approach here would be to get under the car and pull and pry at the driveshafts and all the suspension joints for good measure. Check wheel bearings for play.

Another thing I've done is put the car up on four axle stands and set it going in gear. You have to be very careful doing this, mind. You may be able to feel where the vibration is worst, or even see the fault.

Hi an update on my clutch problem. I tried Bleeding the master but it made no difference, I also checked for leaks and all was ok,but I ended up on Monday slowing down behind a car and not being able to get it out of gear,i had to turn of the ignition to stop,so off it went to the local clutch centre and its now back with a new clutch and slave and all the other bits and bobs,And the wobble seems to have stopped so all seems well .Kieron
