Firstly may I wish you all a very happy new year.
I drove my td4 from s.wales to derby,as I neared my sons house gearchanging became difficult, as I pulled up, the clutch pedal stayed on the floor, the car remained in gear ,so i turned off the engine. I pulled the pedal up with my foot ,the clutch pedal could now be pushed down but I could not select gear.
Called RAC. the engineer who said it was the master cylinder, he then arranged for me to be towed back to s.wales two days later. The following day I found a landrover dealer locally , the said probulary the master cylinder and they had one in stock, easy to fit.
I called and picked it up, i then fitted it without connecting th slave cylinder joint, the clutch pedal travelled to the floor surely this can,t be right.
When the car was towed home the garage where I bought it said it just needed bleeding,which they did.
The clutch has been working for a few days when I pulled up at a road junction, pushed the clutch to the floor selected 1st gear. the car then shot forward with the clutch pedal stuck to the floor, I put my foot under the pedal and when it came up I had a perfect clutch.This has happened twice ,At the moment its working again. Could the new mastercylinder be faulty or could it be the slave. I am taking the car to a different garage friday this week to see if they can fix it.
I cant understand why when the fault happens and I raise the pedal with my foot I end up with an excellent clutch action , much better than when I bought the car.
The clutch action has always ben neer the floor and didnt feel right. Sorry to be so long winded ,
 
Could be a faulty master cylinder but the slaves are known for packing up as well, is it losing fluid? have a look and see if fluid is leaking out from the bellhousing.
 
Thanks clutchdust, will check bell housing today. The bit that puzzles me as well ,is if the mastercylinders are pre filled why could I push the pedal to the floor before i connected it to the slave union.

You shouldn't have done that!!!! ONLY press the pedal once its connected. I don't know if it should go down, never tried.

When the cylinder is disconnected, the end is automatically sealed off to prevent air ingress and leaks, you can damage the cylinder by pressing it when disconnected.
 
Hi Clutch dust.
I took the car to a garage and he bled the system for me, he said he couldnt pressure bleed as he didnt have a connector to fit the small capend . he did it the old way,open the bleed nipple pump pedal etc, it seems to be alot better. time will tell.
He said that the pedal should be hard before it is connected to the slave , but warned against pumping it as it locks solid with pressure and to release this you have to push the nipple on the connector with a screw driver this releases the pressure and allows easy connection to the slave.

check the link has not popped off from the master cylinder i expect the link pops off then when you lift the pedal it goes back on if they used a salvage part then it might be a bit loose on the ball joint
