I have a 2006 Freelander Td4 commercial with 150k. The car gets hard to change gear after it gets warm. There's no evidence of slipping however the biting point is low down. Is this a hydraulic problem or do I need a new clutch?

Hi

It sounds as if it's the beginning of the end for the clutch plate and cover. I dropped my TD4 off to the garage today for a clutch/DMF/slave cylinder/release bearing change, I'm having it all changed as the 'box is off, so makes some sense. I bought all the parts myself, and a recommended mechanic is doing the job. Hopefully pick it back up on Friday................
 
I have exactly the same problem - got stuck in a bad traffic jam today on the Dartford crossing and could barely change gear in the end.
I've bled the car out numerous times and also changed the master cylinder so I'm thinking of doing the clutch.
Is it also worth changing the DMF?

Hi ZL

In my opinion it is, and the slave cylinder too, along with the release bearing. These items are all inside the gearbox housing, and changing them will save you a potential repeat charge. I've just had mine all replaced, and the clutch feels like new, as it should! The parts total was around the £575 mark, the DMF alone being between 300 - 400.
 
hi there just replaced my clutch and master and slave cylinder all for £104 brought parts and did it myself took me 5hrs thats gearbox out clutch in box back on then master and slave cylinder of then on ...

advice power bleed the clutch has this forces fluid through and you get no air lock has the system on the freelander can not be bled
 
Freelander back today and all is well. According to the mechanic the clutch that was on previously was fairly new. What had happened was 2 of the springs had broken off and lodged in the remainder!!
 
Yeah had the flywheel done too although original one was in perfect condition. I had already bought the part so made sense to fit it with everything out. Do have a slightly light clutch pedal but assuming it just needs to settle in.
 
Was talking to a mechanic today and he said it should get a bit firmer after a while. I am experiencing a slight judder when I'm coming to a stop in 2nd though but I'm going to take a long spin at the weekend as I think it just needs time to bed in properly.

At least my left leg wont ache now after a trip to the city!!!
 
Seems I spoke too soon. Over the last few days the clutch pedal has been getting lighter and lighter till this morning it went to the floor and didnt return back. Since everything else was replaced im thinking it's the master cylinder??

Any opinions?

Hi

Normally that is to do with the slave cylinder, but you mentioned that this was changed? Is there fluid under the car, from the bell housing? Other than that, change the Master cylinder, this can cause the pedal to the floor you mentioned..........

Yep had a brand new oem slave fitted and no fluid leaking so must be the master cylinder I guess. I have some resistance in the peddle but only about an inch of travel.
