all points to V8 but 17mpg?

well .. if it's low miles .. mpg shouldn't be a worry ..

then again .. if driving a V8 puts a smile on yer face ..
will it remain 'low miles' ? .. :)

i can understand the 'grin value' of a V8 .. having owned 2 american late 60's cars
( 12mpg usa gallon .. but in the mid 70's gasoline wuz cheap .. by todays comparison )
~~~~~~~~
whatever the case .. petrol or diesel ..
with a used vehicle .. much will depend on how the previous owner(s) looked after it
( goes without sayin' obviously )
Yes indeed on previous owner, I need a good one. Determined to stick with LR but want/hope for less anxiety re reliability issues. To some extent my time with the FL has been marred by knowing too much about what could go wrong, rather than what has actually gone wrong!
maybe you just need a break from reading certain forum pages :)
put it this way .. both diesel and petrol versions can fail with consequences to one's wallet ..
both modern versions have dependency on computerised engine management systems ..
together with the various sensors ..
this page has two disco2 engines on it .. with descriptions of each :
New Disco- Index
( i've no idea what is .. or isn't available on the various discos ..
( never really looked into the subject ..
To be honest guy i have had my 03 td4 which i got from my brov with full service history, i have carried on with the servicing and trust me it as been nothing but a money pit, if it wasn't for the case that i love driving it then it would of gone 6 year ago, i will never get another.
That's how they gets you! I'm much leaning towards sticking with petrol or an older doozal. D2's are complex beasts in diesel or petrol. The 200/300tdi is getting on but less sensors and computers!
Thanks Hd3 - complex buggers aren't they!
complex buggers aren't they!
yeah :) ..
although .. lot to be said For computer managed engines ..
and given the system is in good order .. and reliable from the factoty
( i.e. all bugs worked out ) ..
all it needs is to make sure the wiring and connections are corrosion / dirt free
and protected from the same .. easy to do ..
'n carry any spares .. that .. if the old one went .. it would disable the engine
( like the cam sensor on the Td4 .. 'n maybe a spare l.p. fuel pump 'n filter for same )
no diff. from making sure spark plug cables and associated bits are in good order ..
~~~~

.. that V8 looks quite a lump-o-power ..
bet it sounds good via twin exhausts .. :)

The 200/300tdi is getting on but less sensors and computers!

those look like to be good reliable engines from what i've read ..

although the 200tdi seems to have the better reputation

( i think so .. .. going by something i read on LZ pages ..
( and by what's written here .. see the relative links to both .. :

The Land Rover History

btw: .. i note the Td5 has a cam chain .. as opposed to a belt .. ;)

Thought just flashed into my mind to stick with the devil I know. Reading Td4 woes on here and looking at maintenance and running costs of a Disco, petrol or dooz has got me thinking what a relatively simple beast my K series is - worse case the head blows up! I will ponder - tx for your thoughts on this Hd!!

I think of it like this, when i past my test some years ago i managed to get myself a old style mini, and i loved that little car until i smashed into another car at 10mph and realised if it had been 50mph then i would of probably be dead :(,anyway back to the costing i could of had 1 mini for every day of the month for the moneys i have put into this, so there it is buy a mini not a landy, if you like playing devils advocate. :behindsofa:

I purchased a 2010 Freelander 2 last year, during the cold weather of Christmas on start up I noticed clouds of blue smoke/diesel vapour coming out of the exhaust. The situation happenes each time in a morning but not during the day. The car has only travelled 18k and landrover, under warrenty, have now fitted a new battery, 4 replacement injector seals and 4 new injectors. Still the problem is on going and seems much worst. I have been asked to take the vehicle back to the main agent for further investigation, which will then be the 5th time. We appear to be making no progress here and I am told the situation with my freelander is uneque. Can anyone offer a sensible solution please

Hi
I have been looking at all the TD4 and BMW 2ld forums on this common problem but haven’t managed to find any cure. Mine is a 2004 TD4 with about 85000 on the clock. It has been fitted with a Synergy2, egr bypass, BMW vortex and has been run on shell fuel. For the last couple of months it has started to produce a large plume of blue/white smoke on start up after it has stood overnight or has not been started for several hours. It is bit lumpy for a few seconds then clears and runs absolutely fine after that. I have had the injectors tested and 2 of them refurbished. I have also replaced the fuel and air filters and the glow plugs but the problem continues. It doesn’t seem to be losing any oil or water and I am now at a loss. Has anybody got any idea what the problem could be?

Hi, I had the same symptoms as yourself. Mine is 2004 td4 at 81,000 miles. Blue/white smoke on start up, then disappeared.

I do not have those symptoms anymore, as i had recently bought the vehicle, i wanted to make sure it was serviced properly. I changed the oil and filter (make sure its the correct grade, it can have an affect), turbo vent filter and the crankcase breather filter. On first start up, there was a plume of smoke, but its been going ages now, with no smoke what so ever on start up or heavy driving. (touchwood).

I've not used any additives in the fuel either.

Hi
I started this thread way back in December 2012 and like a lot of owners out there still have the same problem with blue/white smoke at start up. Since then I have changed oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, replaced glow plugs, changed breather for bmw vortex type, swapped all 4 injectors from a td4 which had no similar issues, swapped oil pressure switch, water temp sender and cleaned the maff. Runs great when warm but still smokes at start up. don't think its valve stem oil seals as no smoke once warm. Needless to say I'm fed up. I just wonder if it could be something to do with the low pressure fuel pump? I don't really see how but it does seem a bit noisy and speeds up after a little while once you turn the ignition on. Any more ideas out there?

I started a thread on this also.
Done it all also and just had new glow plugs and wiring checked, injectors checked.......no difference.
People say, TD4's just do it and when the warmer weather comes then it will stop.
I've come to the conclusion that it is simply worn cylinders/valves with less compression.
I have not seen one single definitive solution to this, but have seen plenty of folk lash a lot of cash on replacing non faulty parts.

My TD4 symptoms occur if I do not drive the vehicle for 48 hours. If I had the time I would let the engine sit for a couple of days after a good drive/warm-up, and then pull the glow plugs and stick a cotton bud in each cylinder to see if anything is accumulating, that would show if it is Diesel from leaky injectors, or oil from leaky valve seals. Then you could check the valves themselves by removing the intake plenum. I can't think this would be a rings problem or the smoke would be huge, and certainly be there for longer than a few seconds, but tis possible I guess.
