As my 06 TD4 has now done 60K, I think it may be time to change the belts as I don't know if they have been done previously.

How many belts does the 06 TD4 have?

I assume one for power steering, one for water pump and alternator.
Anything else?

there's two belts the large serpetine one the does water pump, power steering and alternator and a short one that does the air con

Replace the tensioner while your at it, but don't buy a cheap one. It's a fiddly job, but worth doing while the belts are off.

Is there a way of telling the condition the of the tensioner? Or is it just best to change it in any event once the miles get high?

I'm about to change the belts in mine, (just coming up to 100k). I've got the belts, but with one thing and another haven't had the time over the past few weeks to do. And didn't want to start doing them in a rush, in case I got into a pickle ahead of one of the longer journeys I've had to do recently.

But if a new tensioner at 100k is a good thing, I'll do this at the same time too.

Best just to do it. You can't really tell what state it's in. Nothing worse than putting new belts on, and you end up with a nice squeak or rumble.
As said, don't buy a cheap one or you'll be doing it again quite soon.

Personally I prefer Gates belts, the picture below are cambelts, on the left is the Gates belt and a Conti equivalent the right.

Thanks for the advice. I've had a quick look at Rave and other related posts on here, and it seems like there are several tensioners/bits for both the belts. The next time I'm under the wheel arch I'll take a decent look and work out how to approach the job. I've got me 24mm spanner ready for looks like the fun bit!
