Hi guys,

A quick question, after driving through some fairly sizeable puddles one of my drive belts squeals and slips for 2-5 seconds and power feels down (lights dim a bit and struggles to accelerate)... Now i'm guessing its the alternator belt? As i thought they had timing chains...

Does anyone else have this problem? And is there a way to solve/reduce this happening in water? Any way of deflecting the water?

The puddles were nowhere near maximum wading depth and not entering at great speed, and it drives fine afterwards with no problems...

it is ancillary belt ,fit a new one if yours is getting on and try to avoid water

As said above, belts are down to be replaced at 96k I think.

Most alternator belts slip and squeal when they get splashed witha good dose of water.

DONT use wd40 - use drive belt dressing. yu dont want it to slip more.

or do what the rest of us do - ignore the squeal until it dries

That makes sense, i'm at 92,000 so is probably due a new one.

Its due a service now anyway, i'll get it done at same time.

It only squeals for a second or 2, then its fine... With amount of rain been having everywhere seems to be on verge of flooding...

Is there any good ways to waterproof engine? Not a snorkel but just make it a bit more waterproof? As i said the puddles were not 400mm deep so within its limits

Ok, thats good, had wondered about covering lower vents in grille (not in front of radiator obviously) to stop some of it getting in!

But if not needed then i won't!

Mine has been doing the same recently and its getting more frequent so I would suspect it needs a fresh belt, I had been green landing few a couple fords and its been more frequent since then.

Fresh belt and make sure your plastic splash covers are there, they are on front inner wheel arches held on my 3 bolts, also hooking into your undertray

Don't put wd40 on it, the oil weakens the rubber, short term fix but soon wears off.

wd40 weakens real rubber

the belts are made from synthetic rubber.....no problem

What you don't want is water getting in the alternator, but it should be ok in puddles. What you also don't want is water getting in the drivebelt tensioner and idler bearings. They are a real ****e to change....

I have also used trim and tyre dressing on noisy belts. Bit space monkey is right about water in alternator and tensioners.

Tire chalk/wax is normally quite effective. Bit that's only because it's to hand to me
