Hi, Help; Have a Freelander 1, 2006 TD4 auto. The sport mode wont work once engine & gear box warms up to running temp. Have proved fault to L/R dealer's workshop head guy/mechanic. Also 2nd gear, when going from Drive - into 4th, into 2nd takes at least 5 secounds to engage.
They try to bluff me that the gearbox remembers the previous owner's pattern of driving and thats how it works.
Went back to dealer within 24 hours and rejected the vehicle for that and other faults. I'm sure you can guess their answer.
I bought this vehicle because I had a Freelander 1, TD4 Auto, 2003 which I had done 78,000 miles without a problem.
Anyone else had this 'Sport Mode' fault? please.

Sounds bull**** to me. Does the gearbox give you the manual change option when you slide it to sport & if so does where in the rev range does it change up if you then don't manually select the next gear.. Also does the kickdown work ok. Might be that your car is so down on power due to a host of other isues (blocked breather, clogged egr, dirty injectors, seized/non-operative turbo vane actuator, damaged intercooler pipes to name a few) that sport mode might be working but not doing much.

Is it a main dealer?

Does it display Sport on the dash display when you select sport mode? There's sensors by the gear lever to detect the position of the level, and if no signal whilst in D, it assumes sport mode is selected. Once in sport mode, if you push the gear stick forwards or backwards as if to do a manual gear change, it will drop out of sport mode and Sport will disappear from the dash display.

To clear any driving style which the car records, disconnect the battery. Then reconnect.

Slow gear change can be down to solenoids failing, sensors failing. Often a refresh of the auto oil can do wonders to solve problems like this.

Sounds like they is talking ****e. And they know auto repairs can be eggspensive.

Thanks for reply. When you move the gearstick to the right, into what should be sport; nothing happens, it stays in drive and the dash also shows drive still.

Hi, does not show sport mode on dash. Yes it is a main dealer in London.
They tried to download some information while in their workshops but, it failed at least 5 times to download.
They also reved the ****** out of the engine about 6 times, full throttle and hold for upto 30 seconds. Sounded like they were trying to blow up the engine.
After spending money with this dealer for the last 20+ years, it's time I went elsewhere.

Bull! Never heard of autobox 'learning the driving characteristics of the driver' !!! Its a clever box in that it will attempt to be in the correct gear that you need at the right time by checking the throttle position/speed/torque etc but actually knowing whether you are lewis hamilton or reverend jones is a bit far fetched for even a stealer to attempt ot blag you with....

If it were me I’d start looking at the selector PCB connector (white) in the photo below, bottom right.

From the rave disk:

The sport/manual switch comprises a PCB and connector socket which is located to the left of the selector lever and is an integral part of the selector lever assembly and cannot be serviced separately. The switch is connected to the main harness by a twelve pin connector.

The sport/manual switch has five proximity sensors which correspond to the D, N, 4 and +/- positions. The selector lever has two targets. An upper target is aligned with the DN4 sensors and the lower target is aligned with the +/- sensors.

When the selector lever is in the D position, the D sensor is aligned with the target and the EAT ECU receives a signal that D is selected. When the selector lever is moved to the S/M (sport) position, the target moves away from the sensor. This is sensed by the ECU which then initiates sport mode.

The sensors in the N and 4 positions inform the ECU that D has been deselected, but not to the S/M position, preventing the ECU from incorrectly initiating sport mode.

When the selector lever is moved to the S/M position, the target moves away from the D sensor. If the EAT ECU does not receive a signal from either the 4 or N sensors, it determines that sport has been selected. The lower target is positioned between the two sensors for +/- selection. If the selector lever is not moved to the +/- positions, the ECU keeps the gearbox in sport mode. If the ECU senses a signal from either the + or - sensor, it initiates manual mode
and selects the manual gear selection requested. Manual mode will be maintained until the ECU senses a signal from the D sensor.

Mode Selection
Sport Mode
The selector lever (C0410) is provided a main relay feed via fuse 4 of the engine
compartment fuse box (C0575) on an NK wire. When the lever is moved across to the 'S/M' position, the selector lever (C0410) provides a feed to the ATCU (C0932) on an LGK wire.

The ATCU will now enter sport mode. In sport mode, the gearbox still operates as a conventional automatic transmission, but the unit becomes more responsive to driver demands. The selector lever (C0410) is earthed on a B wire.

The selector lever (C0410) also provides a feed to the selector indicator (C0675) on an LGK wire, illuminating the 'S/M' symbol on the selector housing.

I'm sure I've read it does somewhere. Might of been the rave disk. Oh well.

Edit: FL1 doesn't learn driver characteristics. It knows if it's towing or going up/down hill etc.

FL2 can do it. FL1 can't.

it's quite possible, my slitty remembers the driving style. any problems, unplug the ecu for 30 mins. plug it back in then take it out for a run and leather the b'stard. it relearns the driving setup from the initial drive;)

Hippo, THANK YOU for the info and photo. This arms me with info that I can tell the Official Land Rover Dealer that they don't know what they are talking about.
The car goes in on Monday for them to change the Gear stick, well that's what they say.

It may be they knows what the fault is, as per this I put above from the rave disk:

If changing the gear stick, then they is also changing the pcb wiff it, if the above is correct.

I have the same fault (sport mode does not work), when I checked with LR dealer they confirmed fault was outstanding from last service. I cleared the fault code with my reader/scanner but have not tried to use the sport mode since, to be honest after fitting the EGR bypass I find the car goes well enough in normal mode (probably an age thing in my case).

Just out of interest, does kick down still work? And can you remember the fault code?

Yes kick down works ok (just driven home from Exeter A/P so loads of welly).
Can't remember fault code but will have a look to see if still stored on reader.

Hippo, again thanks for the info. The main dealer has changed the gear stick assembly and so far, all seems to work. I did tell them about a flat spot when pulling away from start, which they also found and said that they had to change the MAF (mass air filter)? Only had the car back 2 days so here's hoping no more hassle.
The dealer said, had they not put (and paid for) 12 months warranty the work would have cost me over £1000. Yeah well, dream on. Again, thanks.

Hi all, many thanks for all the words/advice given re my gearstick/sport mode problem.
The dealer changed the gear stick etc, and it all works fine.

Sorry to open a thread back up but I has just got a 55 plate freelander sport auto and I am having an issue with my auto box. It works fine except when i move it across to the sport mode it doesn't come up on the dash. However, the S/M light is constantly lit. Does this sound like the same issue?

Thanks

Welcome to LandyZone asterix.

It could well be a similar fault.

As you say this is an old thread which I've just read through.

I can confirm that the auto-box does learn/adapt to the owners driving style.

When I left the battery disconnected overnight - the whole car felt different the next day - changing up gears at different revs than usual.

I asked the main dealer about this and got the same response as the OP - which I thought was bullsh*t / waffle.

But no- after about a week the car was back to normal.

As an experiment I repeated the overnight disconnect - and sure enough the car went back to what I can only assume are the default factory settings.

Be sure you have any radio codes necessary before you try it for yourself.

Singvogel.

When the auto is in D for drive forward you should be able to move the gear lever to the right, to select sport mode. Sport should then show on the dash. You can then move the gear lever forwards or backwards to manually change gear. If you select D whilst on tick over and move the gear lever to the right then sport will appear on the dash. Now push the gear lever forward once. 2 will appear as the auto changes gear to second.

If the above test don’t work then there’s a problem. If it dun’t select sport mode (which holds gears longer by revving the engine further up the rev range before changing up a gear) and sport dun’t show on the dash then it’s probably the pcb by the gear lever. The pcb should notice the gear lever has moved to the right. If S/M is lit all the time then this is suspicious. If 2 dun’t show in the above test then I would again be thinking of the pcb. Did you buy it from a garage as I think the pcb can be eggspensive. Or look for a second hand one.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, I have worked out that if i push the lever slightly forward when I move it to the right it does go into sport mode but if I just push it across it doesn't. Seems a bit odd to me. I did get it from a garage but they sold it as a sport premium and I think I got had because whilst it has full leather seats the stereo is a basic one with standard speakers and no subwoofer etc. Bit worried to take it bakc and get anything done to it.

Thanks
