Hi there i am hoping somebody can give clear guidance. Having recently got rid of my V reg 1.8k series petrol (i know nightmares) which i have to say gave almost three years and 45K miles without any issues. I decided almost foolishly to buy a 04 TD4 station wagon from Bradford, i am in Kent

64K miles.
All MOT.
All service history.

Picked up in Bradford no problem, drove well for first 120 miles home, then the orange light of doom came on, then off , then on then off etc. Everytime i pushed past 70 it came on very juddery then on pull away. RAC came to me and said the fault is low level fuel pump on their equipment, however he did not think it was that as lots of oil on intercooler pips, he thought might be Turbo. Anyway it goes on low loader to Kent Diesel specialist, who after 4 days suggets it is low level pump as per fault diagnosis equipment i mentioned Turbo, he said wait until fuel pump done and then see.

What i don't want to do is waste £'000s on repairs, i did get a 1 year warranty but this specialist will not recognise that, i have to pay and claim back.

Having read and re read various threads i am at a loss, it appears to be a common fault but has various different causes.

I am not in anyway a mechanic, any help greatfully apprecaited. Also any good independents in kent that anyone can recommend

Thanks

Both the RAC & your specialist have diagnosed the low pressure fuel pump which is a common failure & you should replace this first along with the fuel filter. Oily intercooler pipes are all part & parcel of the Td4 & are normal. Have the crankcase breather filter changed asap preferably with the redesigned BMW unit as when these block power goes followed by lots of black smoke then turbo failure. Your MAF wil be out of spec, search "maf" for further info & this affects performance below 2000-2500rpm. You'll find various cures here for this. Turbos have variable vanes which are operated by the same vacuum solenoid unit used to operate the egr. These solenoids can fail or the vane linkage mechanism can seize which also affects performance. Talking of the egr it must be clean & operating correctly otherwise it can stick open which kills performance. Intercooler hoses are prone to splitting which also kills performance with lots of black smoke - these are fairly cheap & easy to check/replace. Injectors can fail & your only option is to run continuously with a good quality injector cleaner to keep them running sweet as they are expensive & often troublesome to replace.
Get your pump done & see how it goes, then get the essential maintenance points from above carried out & hopefully you'll come to enjoy your Td4.

Nice one chromiumuk :5bhurray:

Follow this advice and you will be fine. The dealer should re-imbuse you for the money, we're quite nice up here in the North you know, give em a ring and politely explain your problem.
If this fails tell me which dealer it was and i'll go round and nut the f*ck*r. :D

When my fuel pump first packed up it stopped running altogether but a tap with my hand got it going again. Then it would keep losing power and each time it did this the engine management light would flash on and off so from your symptoms I would agree that the pump is faulty. Make sure you get a landrover pump as a replacement as some of the pattern ones are noisy (see my separate thread click)

Thank you all for your answers, it really is much apprecaited. However having now had the pump and fuel sensor changed by Kent Diesel Specialists, the car has still not made it out of garage...So far about £350 spent.

They did say MAF sensor then registered a fault, so changed that for a new one but no difference, so old one put back on.

They are now trying injectors, basically taking them out and testing i believe, he assures me this will correct position and soon having me up and running.

Charge £50 + £26 per injector tested, not sure of cost of replacement etc.s

I can see i will hit at least £500 +VAT without the landy being right.

My concern is they are just simply going through the standard steps to try and conculde problem, they don't think Turbo and i can't remember there being lots of smoke, but then i have not seen it since day i bought it.

I am not even a basic mechanic, so all help is apprecaited.

I am based in Maidstone, Kent.

If this is from a dealer then you have rights mate.

"If you buy a used car from a trader it must be of satisfactory quality, fit for the purpose, and as described. Obviously a very old car with a high mileage will not be as good as a newer car with a low mileage, but it should still be fit for use on the road, in a condition which reflects its age and price, and reliable. "

Adding comments like "sold as seen" on the invoice or anywhere else doesn't get them off the hook. It's the Sale & Supply of Goods Act that applies.

They're (supposed) to know enough about cars so that they don't sell them with undisclosed major faults - this applies whether they give you a warranty or not.

You should've spoken to the dealer before doing anything but it'll still be worth having a word, might yet get all or at least some of your cash back.

Well what a week, now had all four injectors done to boot, but am told this will resolve problem. Hopefully looking forward to picking her up tomorrow.......£1000 repair bill. Do i keep or say good bye

Well, i am back.

After a £1350 repair bill, she drove like a dream. However to be on the safe side thought it would be good to get a full service carried out by a good independent land rover specialist, very very thorough service.

Cost £450.

Problem they have identified another £500 of work. total cost if i do this will be nearly £2500 in repair bills, it has made me quite sick really. My previous freelander petrol 1.8 V reg gave alomst two years of service and cost no more than £200 in bills.

My dilema is do i just sell her on whilst she is running to another unsuspecting mug pocket the money and go and buy a newer discovery say 57 plate or do i keep her and try to live with her for a couple of years.
