When I turn the ignition on the warning lamps go out as normal but the TC and HDC lights come on when the engine fires. The engine also misfires immediately after is has started but runs normally afterwards. The TC and HDC lights stay on.
The fault appeared after I replaced the PAS pump. I also cleaned the engine compartment but I was very careful not to spray water on anything electrical.

My brake light switch is the two pole version and it works perfectly.
The engine will start and run with a misfire for a few seconds, then the amber TC and HDC light come on and the misfire goes away. The lamps stay on and the HDC does not work.

How does your abs light work..
Reason I ask is my abs when I bought was wired up to go off and when I corrected this the was abs/hdc/tc lights were then lit

Also means the way of diagnosis could change if you are testing without a diagnostic machine

Is this the 1.8? It could be the TPS ? Does the brake pedal pulse if you keep your foot on the pedal and start the engine?

It is a '2000 1.8. The brake pedal does not pulse when I start the engine.
If I press the accelerator and keep the revs up it takes almost a minute until the lights come on and the engine starts to run cleanly. If I don't, it takes just a couple of seconds.

I can't help but to think that the rough running and lights are connected. Ideally you could do with the Abs ECU being read for fault codes. You could try unplugging the Abs ECU to see if the rough running goes away.

When I worked on the PAS pump my halogen work lamp must have been to close to the plastic vacuum pipe between the inlet manifold and the ECU. The pipe had partially melted and became blocked. Then the ECU got no vacuum signal and had to figure out itself how to make the engine run.
I replaced the damaged portion of the pipe with a piece of rubber hose and now the amigos are gone :)

I have a Freelander 1 and the ABS, HDC and TC light are on when driving.
I have had it reset by someone who has a fault code reader on several occasions but on this occasion it came back after 3-4 miles.
I have in the past checked the resistance on each ABS sensor and they were all the same so it was not that.
After reading some of your comments I was wondering where the ABS control unit is.
Any ideas?
