Hi All,

Well griffdawg helped me out yesterday and ID'd that I need to replace my Tbox inspection plate gasket. I'm struggling to get hold of one in and around coventry (near work). I've seen on the halfords website some 'loctite instant gasket'. Will that work on the tbox? Will it take the pressure?

I've rang a chap at bedworth 4x4, but he had no gaskets in, and said he just buys black sealant from guy salmon landy on the A45 - is this my best option?

anyone know any 4x4 places round here where I can buy gasket, sealant, and EP90 oil today?!

Thanks All

instant gasket should be fine, just make sure when you put it on you dont put it near the inside edge as you dont want any getting into the box itself. put it around the outside of the bolt holes to and dont forget to check the plate for warping, maybe hammer it back flat.

you can get this and EP90 from any motorfactors, use halfrauds as a last resort.

buy a big 4-5L EP90 because you use it in your axles, swivel housing and manual steering boxes also.

Cheer Griffdawg -you must be as busy at work as I am ;)

Another ring around places in cov - plenty of people have instant gasket, but no-one has EP90 in stock.

Halfords have got 80W90 gearbox oil, and the chap on the phone is trying to convince me it's the same stuff.... is he right?

Is it the gasket for the pto cover plate ye's are on about? The one like this...

If it is, then ye'll be lookin' for part# FRC5413

Nope, one like this:

and another shop - MVC - has told me that EP90 has been superceeded by 80/90.... hmmmm

they do think they have some EP90 at their rugby branch though, so he's going to see about getting it transferred up here today.

Legend! thanks BB!

well, at least I know that for next time ;)

I can't get hold of a gasket today, so i'll hope the instant gasket holds, and perhaps order in a gasket 'just in case' for if the instant gasket fails.

yep, getting back into this landy ownership thing.... this is all starting to bring back memories ;)

80W90 is better stuff than the EP80 or EP90 of old. I have just spoken to Castrol and they say it is a change of oil formulation which give a cold temp viscosity of an EP80 and a warm temp viscosity of an EP90, in the same way as a 20W50 engile oil has two viscosities measured.
It is possible that an EP80W90 if left in the vehicle for extended periods (unlikely in a landy) that oil degredation of an ep80w90 will be marginally worse than an ep90 - it will tend to get more like an EP80 when it degrades.
They also stated a couple of interesting points.......
Certain oils are now GL4/GL5 compatible and can therefore be used in gearboxes, unlike straight GL5's.
On units (T-boxes/gearboxes/axles) that suffer some abuse, it might be worth considering an EP80w140 oil as this gives more of a cushioning effect betwen gears. The recomend there Safx-J EP75/140, but said it is considerably more expensive, that ism however, offset against extended oil change periods (prospectively twice the change interval).

yeah, interesting stuff TMHM... not sure why everyone calls you daft tho ;)

Thanks all, EP90 and instant gasket is now in my possession ready for tonight....

Personally I use a gasket and a thin smear of Hylomar Universal when i dont want to take it off all the time. Or if I dont have a gasket I use a thicker layer. Its not eaten by petrol and stuff like that unlike the instant gasket on the fuel sender :frusty: its also non setting so it seals better i think!

Thanks very much all! the job went off, apparently according to the standard rules of landrover mechanics - i.e. I thought it would take about an hour, and it actually took 3! ;)

anyway, turns out my very helpful neighbour had spare piece of thick gasket paper/card, so I made my very first gasket, and stuck it down well with instant gasket. I was a hell of a lot more careful with the instant gasket than the last muppet was - that orang crap was bloody everwhere, and because he didn't bother to clean off the original black stuff properly, it leaked.

I refilled the tbox, and watched it for a while - no leaks. I then started the engine and left it running for a while - no leaks. Then I drove round the block a couple of times using all of the high/low/difflock settings - no leaks :)

the only daft moment I had was that I assumed the tbox would be dry - hence causing my heat issue.... this meant that I didn't bother putting a bowl under the drain hole! big mistake! 2 litres of oil then poured out onto the shared driveway - whoops! Still, it burnt off well after the job ;)

Thanks again for the help - my you're a marvellous lot!
