hi all
help needed please to diagnose my engine problem,
please see my thread in introduce yourself.
it drives ok but tapps like hell.
thank you in advance

are you sure it's your tappets, maybe worth checking your exhaust manifold /manifold gasket for leaks, they can make a clicking noise.

John

no il getting up there? blocked oil ways? I havnt read the other thread. its normall worn rocker arms/followers/cam or all of them due to poor servicing and milage. try some engine flush and serveral oil changes!

Not tappets but tapping sound can come from where the exhaust Y pipe joint with the manifold and when the engine is heard loudest when under load going up a hill etc, worst case is a slipped liner if the engine has overheated at sometime, has been known with LPG fuelled vehicles.

thanks guys for replies,
but this is no exhaust /manifold related problem-this is a mechanical tapp from top end of engine ,plus its a bit flat
cheers

Is the noise there from cold?
Does it increase or decrease in noise with temp?
Is it worse at high or low rpm?

hi,
it is apparent from a cold start but not excessive, then by the time i have done the 3 miles to work its really quite loud to the point of being slightly embarrassing.it does tapp in sequence with rpm untill about 2500.
if i let it idle, just very occaisionly now and then the
tapping will go slightly for a second, this is what makes me think tappet problem due to worn valve train.
sometimes i am sure i hear another more pronounced knock that seems more dense,i wonder if thats a slipping liner-i have never heard a running engine with a slipped liner so dont know what to listen for.BUT there defo is a top end noise .its p***ing me off a little now trying to get a proper diagnosis.
i may just have to strip it to find out,
any more thoughts guys considering the info i have just given
thanks

As recommended before...would try a large can of 'engine oil flush' product followed by a couple of quick oil changes to try flush out some of the black death sludge from the top end..
Noise you're hearing could well be a sticking valve (familar noise and power feels flat are common traits).
Just removing a rocker cover and having a look will confirm the extent of the black death sludge without striping the whole engine down.

Do an oil and filter change, put 10W-40 diesel detergent engine oil in it and run for a few weeks. We had one like that, it has gradually eased away to almost nothing, think it was a clogged hydraulic cam follower.

We've run our V8 on that oil since new short engine fitted, just passed 42k miles with no issues and it is on LPG.

Low oil pressure will also show up as clicketty tappets etc.

hi peter,
i reckon i will go down that road first,
thanks and i will let you know.
thanks to all the other members for there input also

have you check the gems and thor engine at idle for oil pressure? next to none not like the older engine

I had a very similar sound - turned out to be completely dished cam follower and a very worn cam lob. Happens due to the engine webbing shielding this particular lob from getting any oil apparently

sounds more like it mate, will be stripping it soon to examine:(
