any suggestions on this?

I have tried to adjust my valves loads of times using feeler guages, a clicky tool and the good old fasioned back it off a 1/5th of a turn from tight (which works the best of the 3 methods).
I can get them all correct except 3 and 6. No matter how I adjust them I end up with a deathwatch beetle rattle for one of them. when adjusting I find that one time I'll adjust them and they are set correct, on the next rotation there is a ~0.5mm gap there. I then adjust that down and next time there is no gap there and I have to open it again.

I guess something is badly worn, any suggestions as to what? cam follower?

thanks

I would check that it is that first. Remove the fuel lift pump (if petrol) and/or the oil filler pipe from the side of the block and you will be able to see most of the cam and tappets.

However, IME a full diagnosis usually involves removing the head and stripping out the tappets and followers and examining them........as well as the oft need for replacement with new parts :)

ok, it's getting worse, quite often firing on 3 cylinders, I know it's the 3rd cylinder as when it's running badly I can pull the HT lead and it makes no difference.

Is there any way to do anything to the tappet without taking the head off?

Also if I have to take the head off do I need to be able to get to the bottom of the tappet (I guess remove the fuel pump blanking plate) to get them out or can I just pull the assembly out from the top? (I'm worried about the roller falling out into the engine).

Can I even remove them from the engine with just the cylinder head removed?

thankyou, great pictures, can see exactly what I'm going to be doing now ;-)
have adjusted the offending one slack which makes it run fine but it sounds like I have a deathwatch beetle under the bonnet. Keeps it useable until I get around to the proper fix though.

Hmmm interesting I’ve been having a similar problem with pot 3 but i was thinking air leak.
Maybe I’ll have a quick tappet adjust and redo the compression test.
