Hi guys and dolls I'm new to this forum but had a rummage about prior to joining it seems a decent place :) ... Right I have a 300tdi just got it few weeks ago 140.000 miles on a 1996 and has been running sweet as a nut and still is however its just started making a tappity sound from around the fuel pump area . The sound is not there on start up until the revs go up then it starts even on tickover the sound goes up and down speed wise with the revs . If you switch the engine off then restart it is not there till you rev it :-( .. I have a very slight weep from the first injector nearest the pump but would that cause the tappity sound ???? It's annoying

If its coming from the injection pump, it could be drawing air into the system somewhere or struggling to pull enough fuel in, (blocked filter, etc). I've had it twice. Once due to air ingress, once due to blocked lift pump filter.

P.S. if you haven't already, stick a post up in the intro section to avoid abuse and tears :D

Today I drove 3 miles no probs but still the tapping sound but switched it off and had a brew and back out in it WOW!! This time it wouldn't go over 3000rpm and I had white reek :-( deffo power loss , stopped the motor and restarted it and it was fine again so stopped at garage and put in injector cleaner then gave it a good run no white smoke this time and got 80mph but no more (what do they do flat out) when I stopped no tapping sound aaarghhh

change the diesel filter

changed diesel filter today , checked lift pump and seems to be pumping good style , slackened injectors one by one still got tappity sound .. landy drives fine today no smoke and plenty pull so im stumped .. i checked everything with a long screwdriver to my ear and its deffo coming from the pump but seems to be a fraction louder at a certain bit on the pump so ill try to explain where lol.. sranding at front of the motor looking down at the pump between rocker and pump , the pump has a similar shaped part as the blank of plate for egr but with a slightly raised circular bit in the middle of it about the size of a ten pence peice and two allen key bolts holding it on , this seems to be the area where it at its loudest .... only bit i havent taken off yet is the cedimetor or whatever its called on the chassis in front of tank ... any ideas guys or is it a new pump ?????

OK, so its getting plenty of fuel. It could be drawing air in somewhere. When you took the sedimentor off, did you replace the rubber seal? Are you sure the seal isn't twisted? I found out the hard way that, although you can spin the sedimentor body onto the bolt, its better to hold the body in position and screw the bolt down into it or seal can twist. I've also just replaced my fuel tank sender unit today because the old pipes were badly corroded and the plastic elbow for the feed pipe had split. I had bodged it with silicon sealant as a temporary repair.

EDIT: just re read your post and noticed that you haven't removed the sedimentor, so ignore my rambling about the seal, lol. Having said that, the seal in there might be shot or air could be getting in through the sedimentor body, so worth checking.

hi stevie , i havnt removed the sedimetor yet was planning on doing so tomorrow weather prevaling of coarse :)... its funny how if you switch the engine off and re start it but dont rev it there is no noise at all until you rev it :(

Still got the dam ticking but didn't stop me pulling my mates skip lorry out of a muck hole lol :crazy_driver:

Id pull the rocker cover off and check valve clearances. When I rebuilt my head I never set one if the inlet rockers properly. You couldn't hear it on tickover but as soon as you revved it sounded terrible and sent out plooms of white smoke.

Cheers mark

Hey guys I done away with sedimeter , replaced lift pump and fuel filter today and yeeeee haaaaa its sorted now and a bit more responsive and sounds better thanks guys :)

So what do you reckon it was, then? Fuel starvation, lift pump or injection pump?
Stevie I honestly don't know .. The sedimeter was a bit gungy so could have been that restricting the fuel , the lift pump seemed ok a tiny bit of wear on the arm and the filter was put on 300 miles ago so honestly I don't know , but I deffo think fuel starvation from either a worn but not noisy lift pump or the sedimeter blocked ... All I know is its gone ànd sounds a good healthy engine now running sweet and a bit more oomph :)
