Amazing coincidence but thought someone was about to organise a run that passes there (wherever 'there' is) any minute now and luckily i happen to be around those parts then (whenever then is)........what are the chances of that eh?......You really couldn't make this stuff up..........spooky

Maybe after the scums trial we could see if anyone did indeed pop in to visit him at any point to make sure that he was ok.

The 90 is now in a North Yorks police compound being checked over, however typically they are struggling to identify it as the stolen td5, although there is no doubt that it is, but the thief has done a diy ring job on it and changed the plates to an 'S' reg (which would make it a 300 tdi) he has ground the engine number off and changed the VIN plate! I have told north yorks police that the chassis and engine number should be in the ECU and should be retrievable with the right equipment!
The sad part of all of this is that if it cannot be positvely identified then the thief could well get it back
all distiguishing marks have matched up and I personally have identified the 90 with the police and proved it by telling them that the the cranked trailing arms are in fact yellow underneath the black paint that the thief as applied to try and hide its identity, I scratched a small area with a coin in front of the police and bright yellow paint showed through! also the seats are exmoor trim land rover logo cloth seats with a slight cut in them that cannot be seen from outside the vehiclem, this too as been confirmed!
My advice to everyone is to mark or stamp your postcode/name etc all over the vehicle in discrete place, I am going to do that with mine now, although I have some indelible and traceable paint marks that are unique to me supplied by a well known company that also supply to security firms etc and shows up under UV light! (cannot name it for spam reasons) as well which is a similar principle.


The police have etched the chassis where he as ground the chassis number off and they have now revealed the original VIN which confirms it is the nicked one so without a paddle he is , lol

Dave received some information regarding the whereabouts of which passed on to me, I then followed up the leads and with some cunning detective work we went to the address of where it was, I walked past with the spare alarm keyfob and it deactivated the alarm which was the first indication that it was the right one, I then called the local police and explained it to them, they came down and checked the vehicle over, I positively identified it as daves td5. the cranked trailing arms was painted black by the thief I told the police that they are in fact yellow, i then got a coin and scratched the black paint revealing yellow underneath! the engine and VIN number had been ground off and the VIN plate was changed, it had 'S' reg plates on it which where 98 and to my knowledge the td5 was first installed into defenders from Jan 99! the defender was seized by police and confirmed when they revealed the original VIN by acid etching.
after all of this the Thief is still denying nicking it etc and sticking to the story that he had his stolen on the 22nd July 11 and he had got it back! despite the fact that it was him that is seen on the CCTV taking it for a test drive and he can be positively identified! he Must have mental health issues, thats all I can say. Lets just hope that he pleads not guilty and takes to trial in a crown court, he will inevitably go to prison when found guilty, as opposed to getting off with a much lighter sentence for an early guilty plea.
When it is all over and I post up the pic of him, compare it to the cctv image of him on youtube, there will be no doubt, also Dave was face to face with him before and during the test drive and can identify him also.

well the thief has been interviewed by police and has admitted that it was him that stole the Defender, however he claims that it was in fact his Defender that had been stolen from him in July and he had found it and simply decided to take it back! he was questioned about the VIN number etc that had been ground off and he claimed that it was like that when he took it, bearing in mind that that would mean that if it was as he claims then why go to the the trouble of grinding numbers off only to leave the VIN plate in tact?
Well thats that but the plot thickens!
During the early hours of Sunday morning 30th, the Defender was set a fire and has been destroyed! It was a deliberate act of arson.
It was parked in a supposed secure compound owned by the recovery company that is used by North Yorks Police.

He's done it before I would guess. If he gets off I'm sure he will do it again.

I couldn't agree more, I have welded my registration number onto several parts and anything I make - like rock sliders, I weld distingushing marks on it such my initials.

I have also made subtle changes to things that I could use to identify mine and would also make it almost impossible to remove the changes without leaving identifying marks or having to replace body panels etc...

I am about to give mine a paint job and I am going to paint on a coach line for example, all these things just make it a little more unique.

I have also been toying with the idea of making a little water proof box and putting, for example a letter in it with my details and hide it somewhere or even weld it into a repair.

You used to be able to buy a little magnetic box for your spare key which you fixed to the chassis or under the car. Not seen them for years but this would be handy to put your address in.

Does Anyone use bunches of RFID tags?
