Replaced the pulley wire cause it snapped now it will go up when you press the button in the down position but won't go up. My husband has had it in and out several times and still the same problem..

Has the cable been wound on the drum in the correct direction? I'm sure it'll only wind one way, but that's all I can think of, off the top of my head.

Yes like you said it will only go in one way. It's drove us mad today in and out and the same problem every time.

Is the cable in the correct place on the drum, for the window's position on the regulator.
So what exactly does the window do and when?

Yes I think so press the button up and nothing press it down and the window will go up. Then nothing it won't come down again.. took it all out again checked it all and the same thing again.

Have you tried to calibrate the rear window? This needs to be done, or it can't work correctly.

Disconnect battery for 30 seconds
reconnect
Rear window should open fully
Turn ignition to position 2
Use switch in cabin to to fully close rear window

How long have you had the car? Have you ever used the button to put the window up and down before?
If not then assume the previous owner screwed it up or the button has been faulty all along and you're only noticing it now.
Is the button in upside down?
I've had issues with rear passenger door windows behaving weird after being repaired and they sorted themselves out after a while.

If you put the motor cover on the wrong way round your motor will work in reverse....easily done.
